Crankshaft Oil Slinger

I am replacing the timing chain and harmonic balancer on my '67 200 six cylinder and I noticed the oil slinger is missing. Obviously it has worked without it, but the performance has been short of terrible for a while. How important is the oil slinger? A search for a replacement has not been successful. I understand they are no longer available. Maybe i should go to a crate V8 and be done with it.

An oil slinger will not affect performance, but might affect longevity. Can a 6cyl guru explain where it is and what it oils? If it oils the timing chain, how does the double roller set get oiled without it?

hello;

buy a v8

check your timing at idle and saround 2500 rpm and tell us what it is . . it may not be advancing enough or at all.

heres the slinger.

.

Is that not a shield then? By name, a slinger usually helps splash oil on stuff inside the motor.

You are correct. That slinger is there because it was designed to lubricate the fuel pump eccentric and timing gear. That's what the small back turned lip is for on the slinger. That front main seal is a double lip seal and there is not enough splashing or pressure there to cause it to leak. My stroker does just fine without it as does many of my friends who have done the same. It was just added protection from ford but its really not needed.
