2000 Gt Right Bank Not Working?

My wife's 2000 GT (5 speed) appears to be running on only one side.
She was on her way to work yesterday morning. She went to take off from a traffic light and the car made a noise, bang, whatever sound, then stalled. She managed to restart it (a few times) and get it off the road.
Had it towed home and I'm going to check it out this morning.

Car is mostly stock. CAI, Borla Extreme Cat-back and Ford replacement intake manifold.
So far I've noticed it only runs with your foot on the gas pedal.
Seems like there is not much coming out of the passenger side tailpipe.
The drivers side seems like it's LOUDER than usual???
Or maybe it just seems that way because the right sides not running?

Motor has 152,000 miles, not abused in any way.
Service engine soon light is on now.
Oil pressure and water temp appears normal.
No smoking, no backfiring, no leaks of any kind.
No excess pressure from the radiator cap, so I think the head gasket's cool.

I need to pick up a Code reader first thing this morning so I can diagnose this problem.
Any ideas/input on what might cause one bank to quit all of a sudden like that?

Thanks for any tips/info.

Tommy

Consider performing a compression test. That will let you know right away if looking at a base engine failure.

Note, one of the timing chain tensioner's wore through to the prior owner of my 2000 GT. The tensioner broke and plastic pieces jammed between the chain and crank tooth gear stopping the motor. This happened at 145K miles.

Consider getting an oil filter cutter. Cut the oil filter open and look for metal debris on the paper element.

Good luck.

Thanks
I've got 0300 Generic misfire code and a 0304 Misfire on #4 code.

I checked the coil with an ohm meter and it seemed to be bad compared to the others in readings.
So I replaced it and no change......
Took 2 plugs out, they look fine, no wet, no black, no oil.

I suspect that if you took the valve covers off the diagnosis will be confirmed.

IMO it's likely there's a bent valve. The 4.6 is an interference motor and PTV contact is almost assured when a timing failure "event" occurs.

What are your plans? Rebuild, new crate? Salvage?

If a salvage yard motor is in your future, research Windsor to Romeo swap. Consider a Romeo from a 2001+ Crown Vic, Grand Marquis, or Town Car.

Def sounds like a chain may have let loose or skipped a bunch of teeth causing PTV contact. I would do like urns said and pull the cam cover off on that side and take a peek. Pull the timing cover while your at it. If that's the case you will need to decide on a engine.

I pulled the engine apart and it's definitely NOT GOOD.
4 "rockers" laying loose on the head???
4 bent intake valves in the permanently open position.
4 pistons that look like someone gave em a whack with a cold chisel ;8-(
Timing chain guide ground up between the crank gear/sprocket and the chain.
Lots of pieces of plastic everywhere. !@#$%

Looks like a complete rebuild/replacement is in order here.
Finances are kinda tight now, so she's gonna sit a while I fear.
At least we have a nice big garage to keep it in.
We bought the car new in Aug. 2000, so I really don't want to part with it.
Not to mention the rest of the car is in great shape and has not been thrashed it's whole live (wife's car).

The 2000 GT that is my daily driver was originally a Craig's list "project car". I bought the car with a failed Windsor motor. There was a timing chain issue and top end oil starvation was the diagnosis.

The low mileage Salvage Romeo replacement motor came from a 2003 Grand Marquis cost $800. A few hundred hundred for various parts such as a flywheel. clutch, motor mounts, fluids and so on, to get it back on the road.

That was 3 years and 50K miles ago. A successful swap by most any measure.

For some sample prices of salvage motors try car-part.com or LKQ. This will give you an idea about how much and what kind of availability to expect in your area. This will help you decide of a salvage motor is right for you.
