This would be true if the intakes you mentioned were as cheap as a worked over explorer intake - They're 50% of the cost - and if you are using a lower flowing head.
With that said, if you are running a head that moved more air than what an explorer intake can be made to handle, this whole conversation is a moot point and you should buy a better intake, and I bet he'd direct you to do so.
The ported explorer should be fine for the job. I know they are a big improvement over stock. I have been around the forums for around 10 years now (different user name) and know that his intakes flow as good or almost as good as aftermarket intakes. Blah blah blah I don't think we really need to get into it. It's just an option, and one that I should have done in the first place. I know there are better intakes out there but I love the look of the cobra intake. It is also hard to find a used (insert name that out flows a gt40) intake locally. They are just not around or people want like 50 off the new sticker price. On the classifieds it is a similar story, by the time you pay for shipping it's not that great of a deal.
