General Horsepower Questions - I'm New

So what does this fella have to tear off and where and what "markings" does he need to look for to determine exactly what heads he has? I'm guessing remove upper/lower intake and valve covers aka cylinder head covers?:droll: Oh and the whole fox and Camry thing was just to give the guy something to compare to. I wasn't dissing the fox necessarily. However, it still chaps my azz that ford was kinda on the wimpy side compared to their foes until now and I need $40k to get a v8 or $30k for the girl model.

For a "the wimpy side" kind of car, that EFI 302 was outrunning everything else in the 80s except the TTA and Grand Nationals.

Damn, I love this site. You might be coming down a little hard on this guy, but you've definitely shown your stuff! I love the detailed responses with pictures showing how to ID GT40 and TFS heads. I concur with everyone. Despite the valve covers, I very much question the TFS head claim. Much more likely to be GT40P heads, which would make the motor a likely Explorer swap. I haven't heard of professional products TBs. I'm assuming lower-end aftermarket company?

Yes, Chinese TBs. I think the OP has been scared off. Hopefully not offended, but more than likely sick to his stomach over his purchase.

I do wish he would come back on here and post up some good pics. I know most people just want to help him figure out what's up with his car.

I think the OP was fed a bunch of BS by the guy who sold him the car, combined with his apparent lack of knowledge about these cars. Hey, we all have to learn at sometime. Some lessons are costlier than others.

Case in point, my first Mustang was a 67 fastback when I was 15 and my eyes were as big as manhole covers when I saw it. Paid full asking price of $2300 for it and the motor blew up within a few months racing it at E town. When I tore it down, it was completely stock with about 2 million miles on it, judging by all the sludge in the motor. I was told it was a "built" motor with a 3/4 cam (remember those) hipo pistons and rods. Nothing more than a stock A code 289- was told it was bored .30 over. I went to a jy and found a wrecked Lincoln and swapped the entire drivetrain- 428 motor, C6, and 9 inch rear into that Mustang. Lot's of white knuckle driving with 4 wheel manual drum brakes and manual steering.

I agree. But maybe just maybe there are some Trick flow heads on there. I hope he comes back.

yeah pro products makes intakes such as the "Typhoon" which is a knock-off of another brand but I can't place my finger on it at the moment. I too was impressed with the responses this go 'round, I learned something, thanks fellas.
Ps: I wonder what he has...???

I have a pretty nice PP 75 mm out in the garage that makes a pretty damned good ash-tray! It's shiny! :nice:

It likes to stick open at WOT. :nonono: That was pretty scary. Boost gauge was at 14 lbs at the time.

I think he done squirreled away

I believe those intakes where copies of the Edelbrock Performer. As far as the 5.0 being slow in stock form, I disagree. With only a CAI, shorty headers and full exhaust with the help of some gears I was killing just about anything that rev'ed on me back in San Diego during the height of the illegal drag racing scene that was heavily polluted with imports. My old 88' LX 5.0 that you say is slow went head to head with an Eclipse GST running at least 10lbs of boost and heavily modified and we stayed even nose to nose.

I guess but I don't wanna brag about beating a civic and the likes (yes I know some are fast) but you're talking about beating a car that started out life w 200 hp in in stock trim. Just think how bad of a spanking you could've given the eclipse if you added your bolt-ons and gears to a 275 hp motor like the GM's had in 93 vs our 215-220. The magazine articles didn't even pair the Mustang gt vs the z28 for comparison test. It was always the cobra vs z28. Sad we need $3k worth of topend work to compete w stock GM's. That our race civics. Enough of that, sorry about the rant.
As far as the OP's situation, my bet is that he has a thrown together budget build featuring: tfs 170's, pro products tb, 94/95 maf, and either a stock explorer or an explorer w a ported lower.

I don't lose any sleep over who's STOCK car beat anothers STOCK car. What I do care about is building a car that will perform very well within my budget and is a car I'm passionate about.

If you know anything about the older 1995 style Mitshbishi Eclipse GST which is a front wheel drive turbo'd car you'd know they were highly sought after because they were fast with only a couple bolt on upgrades. Also as far as Civics go, ever seen the old 89' hatches with a GSR swap? Naturally aspirated those cars were very fast at the time.

Only sleep I lose is having to spend $4k on a 200 hp car to make a 300 hp car where as if ford would've given more to start with that $4k would've carried us further. Frustrating is all.
