I plan on putting a trans cooler on my AOD when I install a 2400 rpm stall convertor, just not sure what brand cooler is the best, also not sure how the lines should be ran, should they still connect thru the stock cooler in the radiator or just be ran by themselves?

I recommend getting the biggest plate style cooler you can find. I used a B&M Supercooler.

For optimal performance you should run the line from your trans into the radiator side tank and then through the cooler and then back to the trans. I have mine mounted in front of the condensor low on the front to get as much air as possible. Secured it with the ties that come in the kit and also made a bracket. Now guys will tell you the hoses that come with the kit are not good and you NEED to get braided hose. BS> as long as you flare out the ends of the trans line and the hose clamps are on tight, they will be fine.

+1 on B&M brand and flaring the ends of the hard line so the hose clamped hose can not slip off under pressure.

Hayden is another good brand I trust. I like how they have mini fan options if you do not have room in front of your radiator.

There are STRONG differing opinions on the routing of the fluid. So, I looked up what Hayden says.

Once you download the right instruction set and find your language, it says 1. Trans, Radiator then Cooler, or 2. Trans to Cooler only with a damaged radiator. So the opinion that the radiator may reheat the fluid could be valid.

OK, but does the cooler connect to the top or bottom hard line? I'm not sure which is line in and which is the return line.

Here is a simplistic diagram

On an AOD the hot port is the top and the cool return port is the bottom.

Read and learn- this is the best AOD site on the web

While you are at it, spend $10 and replace the plastic bushing in the TV cable where it fits in the throttle cable arm with this brass bushing, It will save your AOD one day as the plastic bushings always break, and the TV cable falls out, and then your trans burns up in about 10 miles.. Yes- they burn up that quick.

Thanks for that diagram. I had a cooler on the car about 15 years ago and had it hooked up by itself. Back then I had a 10in convertor and a performance trans but after it went out on me and I had a lot of metal flakes in the trans fluid I took it off and went back to a stock AOD. I have had the car since new, bought it in 1989 after the 90 models came out and have replaced the shift bushing plenty of times, been getting a new one each Spring when I get the car out, part of my Spring oil change and tune up, since they are only about $1 I don't mind replacing it each year. I had been keeping the car mostly stock up till 2 years ago when I broke the crank and destroyed the block, so now it has an Explorer 5.0 with a Mustang cam, just got my 1.7 Rockers for it today, and plan on picking up a 2400 stall convertor this weekend. I picked up a 73mm Mass Air meter and 24lb injectors for it also, not sure if I'll put them on or not but got them for such a good price I couldn't pass them up. I built the motor last Spring but ran out of money for everything I wanted so slowly I am getting it where I want it.
