Progress Thread 1969 Calypso Coral 428 Cj Mach 1 #1124

I went through some of my stashed parts yesterday and found some good pieces .I found 3 sets of 69 deluxe door panels with all the trim and lights ,panels are toast but all the trim is very nice .3 set of 69 headlight buckets ,a whole pile of stainless headlight trim for 65 -70 ,a very nice set of 67 -68 headlight buckets ,a couple of very nice 67-68 front valances and stone deflectors .Upper vents for a 67-68 fast back ,a pile of lower 67 vents .A 68 new old stock complete grill that i had in a car for about a month .A perfect set of deluxe hub caps for a 68 that were only on the car for about a month. About 5 cars worth of the plastic radio opening trim and dash end trim for a 69 ,about 5 cars worth of 69 fast back side scoops ,and i have just started .I would put some of it up for sale except soon as i sell a piece i wind up needing it .

I started taking the tail panel out this morning ,what a PITB! It is not like a 65 -68 .It has brackets inside to mount the tail lights and i am trying to save them because they are not available .They sandwich the tail panel in between them and the piece under the end caps .I don't want to drill through all three pieces because i don't want holes in the light bracket ,so i am taking it out in pieces ,doesn't help that the tail panel is bent up . I want to have it all trimmed out and in epoxy primer before the new parts come in .

The new sheet metal came in today. The full floor pan kit comes complete with seat risers ,floor plugs, rubber plugs ,and even the emergency brake cable bracket. It even has he rear seat retainer clip ,although they are for a coupe /convert. Even the top of the rear torque box ,i have a bunch of these i never had to use .

The panel below the rear window is nice ,except it is 1/8 inch narrower than the original so i will need to widen it or the trunk lid will be to tight to the quarters. It does have the window stainless clip studs .

All the work i did trying to save the tail light bracket inside the taillight panel ,and the new tail panel has the brackets installed .I Will save the old ones ,some one may need them sooner or later .

The outer air box had a big dent in it and i didn't like that so i bought that as well.

The weather has been warm and sunny ,until today, now it is cold and foggy so i will have to wait a couple of days to sand blast and prime the inside of the car so i can put the new floor and other parts in.

A friend of mine has been changing out the rear leafs on all his cars for 4 links .He gave me a set of leafs that are almost new ,along with the shackles and new bushings .I had an old set of leafs i had already bolted under the car that i will use for sand blasting the car for now .He also had the rear end mounting plates and U bolts ,I bolted the nine inch housing and axles under it for now so it will roll, and i took out the dolly it was setting on .It's been raining on and off for the last few days so i hope to get it blasted and primmerd inside around the end of next week so i can put in the new floor .Been really busy last couple of weeks and haven't had time to work on my projects :(

I removed the driver side outer air box .

I marked the old lower window panel before i removed it .I will mask off the marks before i sand blast so i don't loose them ,all i have to do is line the new one up with my marks and the lid will fit the same as the old bent up panel .
IMG_0291.jpg

I spot welded the trunk latch bracket to the tail light panel with my spot welder and i removed the bumper brackets from the trunk floors, that is the only way the tail panel will go in with out removing end cap mounting area at the end of the quarters . I can slip the tail panel in from inside now with out removing anything else .

I am going to pick up the sand and the primer tomorrow and i hope to blast it Friday, and primer Saturday.

I bought the sand and the primer .The blaster is filled ,Leroy (the compressor )is gassed up ,the hoses are laid out and ready to go. I am going to blast as much of the interior as i can ,i want to blast the inside of the trunk now because the tail panel is out and it will be a lot easier to do. Supposed to be around 71* tomorrow so it should be perfect sand blasting weather .

Good old Leroy ,built in 1953 and still going strong .Got it blasted ,i blasted the inside and in the trunk and a little bit around the edges because i had some sand left . The rust in the roof didn't didn't blow out any worse so i will patch it .The lower part of the toe boards on both side need some patch work .The fire wall and the cowl cleaned up very nice .Going to try to primer tonight .I think i will start at the rear of the car and do the tail panel and lower window panel first .

The tail light panel is in .The lower rear window panel is in ,i used my spot welder to weld it in place because i didn't have to drill through the under bracing like i did the tail panel and the air box.The driver side outer air box is in .The trunk lid is bolted on but it is not latched so it sets a bit high at the rear ,when i push down slightly it lines up perfectly . The toe board patches will be next ,probably some time next week.

I did the toe boards this morning ,wasn't much just a couple of holes .
IMG_0310.jpg
IMG_0311.jpg

I finished the toe boards so fast i decided to put the floor in. It took three of us to put it in ...Me ,My self and I:rlaugh:.That's right i did it my self .Wasn't to bad ,i went through the wind shield opening .It fit right through .
IMG_0312.jpg

The floor fit really well ,i used a few screws to pull it down tight and i used my clamp i made to pull it tight to the floor supports.
IMG_0313.jpg

I pre drilled all the spot weld holes 1/4 inch ,and used my hole punch around the edges and welded it in.
IMG_0314.jpg

The seat boxes were next .
IMG_0315.jpg

I have a little bit of welding around the wheel tubs, and the rear seat panel brackets and the floor brackets for the seat bottom still has to be welded in and the transmission bracket needs to be welded to the floor but i will do that on the rotisserie . I am going to try to put it on the rotisserie tomorrow ,i have to shuffle a couple of cars around so i can get to my lift ,and i have to bolt the rotisserie back together first.

I got it on the rotisserie. looks like i need a driver side trunk drop off and the very bottom of the quarter.
It had a rat nest in the driver front frame rail ,took forever to get it out ,only because it had a paper wasp nest the size of a base ball also .
