Progress Thread A Short Shelby Type Hood For A 69 Mustang

Ok... If I'm following the layers correctly:

It look like the two front rams channel air to the air filter.
The back two vents are induction vents to push bay air over the top of the car.

Is that right?

I hope they're not all pushing ram air into the top of the engine bay.

What are the two in the front for?
The front two are to let the squirrels in ,the back are to let the squirrels out

The fronts bring cool air into the engine compartment and the back two are to let heat out .The middle one feeds air into the carb .RAM AIR ! The two fronts and the two rear openings will have screens in them same as the Shelby hood did

Hmmm... Any air that you're letting into the top of the hood is air that diverted AROUND instead of through the radiator. I'm not sure that eliminating negative lower air pressure from the engine bay is such a hot idea (get it).

You would have to bring that up with Mr. Shelby him self, he designed the original hood ,i just made it shorter and redesigned the under bracing to work with factory fenders.

If any hood would have diverted air from the radiator it would have had to be the 68 Shelby hood .The 68 has two openings way in the front of the hood and they go almost all the way across .The ram air hood would have ran air into the carb but the non ram air hood would have ran air into the engine compartment .

I extended the under brace all the way to the front of the peak so it will look a little bit more finished The V pocket i made for clearing the hood latch and the joint line where i shortened the under brace blended in very nice .I sanded the under brace with 400 grit wet ,it is ready to make the mold .I will have a lot of masking to do to keep gel coat and resin off the under side of the hood ,I plan on using this hood when the last mold is made .

I got the hood masked off ,waxed and ready to go .I made a plug to fill in the latch opening ,the less holes ,the less chance of chipping .there will be a ring left in the mold from the edge of the plug and that will be the cut out line in the new part .I also filled in the notches in the front of the under brace for the peak molding nuts with wax and left the wax slightly low so the pockets will show in the mold and new part and that will be for a cut out line .I filled in all small holes like the bolt holes with wax ,they will be a dimple in the new part for drill location of the bolt holes .I will start on the mold first thing in the morning.

This was a project from a couple of years ago ,i finished this one today .It's the trap door for 67-70 fast back .
I started with a perfect dent free 69 door and made front and back molds .This one will never dent or warp and the grain finish is prefect. There are a lot more parts i want to make .

I got the under brace out this morning .Not a chip in it and no damage to my original hood. The mold weighs about 40 pounds .Now the trimming ,and that is going to be a biotch because i left it in the sun yesterday and it is baked .It is about 3/8 inch thick so my saw will probably wear out a few blades .I will sand it smooth like i did with the top and wax it and i will be ready to make the first hood with both new molds .

The screens will probably have to come from mustangs Unlimited ,i bought the screens for my 69 Shelby replica .They have to be trimmed and hand fit so fitting each and every one would be a pain in the butt for me .I will make a pattern from mine that will go with the hoods ,the screens are aluminum so they trim and bend easily .I was trying to figure out how to attach them ,i was thinking windshield glue in a few drops around the back side of the scoop openings and press the screens into the glue and let it set up .The screens are black so it would be done after a hood was painted .

This will be the first hood made with a new top and a new under brace .
I sprayed the top and bottom mold with mold release .When that dried i sprayed in the white gel coat .90* today so it didn't take long to harden .
I cut the mat for both molds and started laying it up. I will trim the under brace tomorrow and bond the two halves
together
.

I removed the very first new under brace from the mold and trimmed it out .
_MG_4955.JPG

I made a bunch of the steel latch plates yesterday ,i took one and spot welded the nut plates in and primered the plate .I then bolted the latch plate in the under brace and pop riveted it in .

I bonded in the under brace ,didn't get a pic casue i got a bit messy and didn't want to touch the camera.
It sat in the mold from 8 this morning until 3 when i removed the brand new hood from the mold .

I ground out the bottom of the hood ,drilled and threaded the hinge mounting holes ,cut out the scoops ,and drilled the hood peak molding screws holes .
It came out beautiful ! This hood is sold ,it was sold before it was finished actually .I think there will be more of them soon. I hope to see some painted and finished cars with them real soon .

This is a beautiful piece of work. The thing that I think makes it stand out is that it fits. I have seen very few parts on this forum that haven't needed to be shortened, lengthened, twisted , bent or tweaked before the install. I think this is because Jim has done more than a few restorations in the past and he knows where all of the problem areas are. There will be one of these in my future. Nice work.
