I'm seeing after buying my 92 LX 5.0 that it has been running from 210-230 and I don't get it! I have a nice 2 row Al. rad with the Mishimoto dual 12" high flow fans and it's still running too hot. Any thoughts? Here an overview of motor.

D&D Comp Hawk 347 stroker with a Novi 1000 s/c, 40# injectors, 255lph pump and 150hp nitrous kit (using 80 shot) . This motor has the AFR 185 Al heads and GT40 upper and lower. It's running a Holley Commander 950 ECU that the tuner added the control of timing to as the former owner just set the total time to 36 degrees and let it fly. We're still working on the tune as it runs nice at 2500 rpm down the highway, but idle and just off idle it's loading up. The plug is an Autolite 3924 gapped at .030 on a MSD wires, coil, cap and Ford distributor.

Thanks,
David

I would suggest a coolant flush and possible stat change. If its not running cool with at lowest a 180* then you have another issue. Either a clogged coolant jacket, blown HG or something creating too much heat (the blower will create some more as well).

The mishimoto fans are junk. I had the dual contour setup on a stock replacement radiator with no problems. I picked up a lightly used mishimoto radiator and fan assembly at a swap meet and the car started running hot sitting in traffic. Never over heated, just ran hotter than normal, close to over heating. I swapped my contour fans over onto the mishim to radiator and have not even ran the slightest bit hot sitting in traffic.

What are you using to control the fans? If you change your thermostat then you'd need to change the temp that the fans kick on and off at. Also, as @RangerJoe hinted, some fans don't flow as much CFM as others.

Your plug gap seems to be a little on the small side too. Did your tuner suggest that?

Currently the fans are on a toggle not a temp probe. They run constant. As for the gap, yes that was the tuners suggestion. I normally would have gapped at .040.

Is contour a brand or style fan? eta: Oh DUH!!! Ford Contour!

Fans are constant? Is this a track only car? If not it sounds like you need a new fan setup. Doesn't your Holley ECU control electric fans? If so you could use the ECU to trigger a relay to turn on/off the fans at whatever temp you want with consideration of the thermostat you're running.

Edit: the downside to controlling dual fans or high amp drawing fans (contour fan) through an ECU is they typically turn the fan/fans on at the same time at 100% power (big amp spike on the electrical system). Using a fan controller like a FAL, Derale or DCC you can have the fans come on at 60% power and then slowly increase to 100%.

No it's going to be a (barely) street (legal) car that I can take to the track. I haven't finished the Holley ECU manual yet but I THINK it does fans and temp. The 6-12mo plan is for a 547cu BBF with 2 kits of 150 nitrous. But that's a ways away.
What about the Black Magic Xtreme electric fan kit from Flex-a-lite?? It states 3,300 CFM but at 18amps.

Couple of things

1. Those fans are junk. Get either a Taurus or MKVII fan
2. You have a supercharger- that is going to increase your underhood temp
3. You have alum heads- they are not going to soak up the heat as well as iron heads

That being said, change the fans, flush the system and refill with a 50/50 mix of green coolant, put in a new 180 Stant stat and see how that goes. Oh, and if you are using the stock temp gauge, get a real one to measure the temp. The stock one is about as accurate as an idiot light.

I'm not sure but I believe I just read that @TOOLOW91 has the BM Xtreme fans cooling his SC'd 363. I think he's happy with it.
Car has not been over 196 on the hottest humid day of the year yet . Runs right around 184-186 and boy does that sucker have some heat pumping around under the hood

To clarify what fans are you calling junk? The mishimoto fans or the black magic or both?

The mishimoto and the lower rated glack magic fan. The more expensive BM fan flows about 3300 CFM and is a good but pricey piece.
I don't even see the lower rates one for a fox anymore all I see is the extreme

i feel your pain, have a b cool rad and a black magic fan, been trying to lower my temps for a while now also, the fan works great on my truck but thinking of getting another set up for my stang, dont want to hijack but ive been wondering also, what you guys say is a good temp on a hot summer day?,mine runs 180-190 on a cooler day and 200-210 on a hot traffic day with a 180 thermo?.....331 stroker, from what i read ppl say they just run hot?

Well a 180 stat should open at 180 so the car isn't really gonna cooler then that . I have seen 196 the hottest so far with my car and once I am moving it stays around 186

It's the same as the proform fan. On the box it says it is good for motors up to like 220hp. Can't remember the CFM but my guess is prolly 1800 or so[/QUOTE

I wouldn't cool my tricycle with that pro form lol
