This weekend didn't quite go as planned. Yesterday, I loaded up my front bumper cover to take to the resto shop and hopefully start laying down color on it and the rear that I started working on several months ago. I guess my memory was a little fuzzy because I thought I had finished sanding the rear, Buuuuut 3 hours of work finally netted me a rear cover ready to prime. Unfortunately, that's about when my buddy was ready to go back home, so no paint this weekend.
That's ok, still had plenty of other things to do. I've been wanting to pull the front clip apart and replace all the damaged and missing hardware, so I did. This is where the hero of the story reaches rock bottom, it seems. I found a ton of stuff I was not happy with.
#1 - A ton of surface rust.
#2 - a bent frame
#3 - someone had (crappily) replaced the core support.
(no pic)
#4 - the fender aprons are trash.
The pass side is in better shape, but still has some damage from the accident.
So as you can see, I found a lot more than I had anticipated. I knew the car had been wrecked. Maybe I just wanted to pretend that it wasn't there because I KNEW that if the fenders had been replaced and the inner fenders were wrinkled, something had happened and the core support wouldn't look as new as it did. This doesn't change anything with the car and my plans for it, just disappointing is all.
The decision I need to make now is whether to pull the motor and fix the sheet metal and detail the engine bay. This worries me because of my track record with projects. We will see.
Whatever you do.......
#1. Do not remove the engine.
Do not remove the engine as a " pre-justification" for fixing the fender aprons
You should well know by now that removing the engine , while it makes for a much easier task to properly detail the EC, will lead to a slew of " Since the engine is out of it's".
#2. Ignore my previous advice from two replies ago, and BUY the correct, pre made replacements where all you'll have to do is drill out spot welds, and install fresh sheet metal. I've found that as projects go, the thinner steel gets, the higher level of skill that's required to turn it into something that doesn't look like ass.
#3. Rattle can Bed liner on inner fender wells after a wash and stuff will negate the fact that nobody will ever see them but you are still bothered by it.
#4. Revisit #1.
I pulled that honkin terminator out of that Tri-colored Cobra I had a couple years ago. The sole purpose being to clean it and the EC up, and stop all the damn oil leaks. One month later it was back in w/ a new flywheel, clutch , #8 coolant mod, and zero leaks. If you can stay focused, and avoid the " while the engine is outs" black hole, then you go boy.
#1 - I am going to avoid it at all costs. Not ready for that YET.
#2 - Learned that lesson, will not repeat it. I WILL be buying the CORRECT replacement parts.
#3 - Absolutely gonna happen. Although I still have a hard on for hammer tone paint. And I can roll it on.
#4 - I have 2 projects to complete before the engine comes out. 1 being the above issues and the other being my suspension project. The engine will be lowest on the list as I haven't completed the heads, nor do I have the cam or intake yet.
I did come very close to selling my dog for a tubular GT40 intake this weekend. Guy wanted $400 for it, with TB, spacer, injectors, blah blah.... Allen brought me back down to earth and reminded me to be patient. Thanks, mang @Boosted92LX
It still stinks in the living room. And I hit it with the carpet cleaner TWICE.After that carpet cleaning you had to do Saturday, I might've sold that dog on GP. LOL
edit: Forgive my manners- you're welcome bud.
Having a dog will teach you a lot about patience so down the road when you have kids and they make a mess you won't be so quick to drop them off at the nearest fire station or trade them to that "Subway guy" for an intake manifold
p.s. try white vinegar to get the smell out and invest in a quality carpet shampoo'er.
Try this stuff- it works- Fizzion- it actually breaks down the urine bacteria.
LOL yeah, she's actually been a dream compared to my previous puppy who was a monster. We have a Bissell Little Green, which does a really good job. And we've put it through some ringers.
I wish it was urine. She ate something that didn't agree and it all came back out the front side. On the shag rug....
I'll put you in touch with my wife and let you pitch the idea. I haven't been successful with it.LOLZ..
Bunch a rookies. Keep the critters outside and never clean up a mess again.
Wut?
