Need Some Opinions On A Car

Yeah, it also has the non-mustang standard rotation waterpump belt setup. Crown vic stuff maybe? Anyway, foxes use a reverse rotation water pump, bud. This meaning the way the belt is routed the non ribbed side rides on a smooth wp pulley. You need to confirm you have the correct water pump for that belt setup or you will certainly have cooling problems.

So far no cooling issues. But since I'm not sure of the set up here are some more pictures for you guys.

Ok, just understand if you ever need to replace the waterpump, dont buy one for a mustang or you will have problems. What kind of carb is on it? I'm guessing edelbrock?

Well in the previous owners defense he was turning it into a drag car. Of course now I want to make it a street car. I'd love to go back to Efi and ac but the only way I'll do that will be if someone swaps with me. I don't plan on dropping a ton of money on that stuff.

Although maybe I can pick up a system from a junk yard car cheap?
The intake/fuel system is cheap enough, it's the ecu and harness that will set you back. Unless you have those in the trunk I would think that to put it all back together would likely cost in the 300 dollar range. Enjoy it as is.

Thanks guys. I would have never known the water pump was from a different vehicle so I appreciate that. As of right now it appears to run pretty good. The car is a bit "Raw" for me but it is growing on me. The rear shocks are completely blown so it is tough for me to enjoy driving it as is. I picked up some inexpensive Gabriel Ultra's to stick in to see if that helps.

My main goal at this point would be to make the car as driveable as possible AND just have fun with it. I love tinkering with cars and making them right so I am sure I will be on here asking questions and trying to learn.

I Also noticed it hits about 2600-2800 RPM's at 70 so I think it is geared at 4:10. That"s not a big deal because it certainly isn't a daily driver and I don't plan on driving long distances on the highway.

Are there any markings on the block and heads you can find? Almost curious if a non ho engine was dropped in and topped with a carb.
Very good thought. Pull the valve cover and see what cylinder fires after the #1 cylinder. I forget the firing orders but I think ho is 1 then 3 and non-ho is 1 then 5?

Paint the mark on the harmonic balancer with paint -choose 10 degrees BTC or 14 degrees BTC or something else if you have NO2 or other power adder. I try to paint TDC red, 10 degrees BTC white and 14 degrees BTC blue.

Remove the SPOUT connector (do a search if you want a picture of the SPOUT connector) It is the 2 pin rectangular plug on the distributor wiring harness. Only the EFI Mustang engines have a SPOUT. If yours is not EFI, check for a SPOUT: if you don’t find one, skip any instructions regarding the SPOUT
Warning: there are only two places the SPOUT should be when you time the engine. The first place is in your pocket while you are setting the timing and the second is back in the harness when you finish. The little bugger is too easy to lose and too hard to find a replacement.

Connect timing light up to battery & #1 spark plug.
To time the ignition: remove the SPOUT and use the timing light to check the timing against the marks on the harmonic balancer. Loosen the distributor hold down bolt and turn the distributor slowly until the light and the desired mark on the harmonic balancer line up. Tighten down the distributor hold down bolt and re-install the SPOUT jumper. When you put the SPOUT back in the computer will advance the spark. The timing may move around some with the SPOUT installed.

10 degrees BTC is towards the drivers side marks.

Simplified diagram of what it looks like. Not all the marks are shown for ease of viewing.

ATC ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' '!' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' BTC
---------------- > Direction of Rotation as viewed standing in front of the engine.

The ' is 2 degrees.
The ! is TDC
The ' is 10 degrees BTC
Set the timing 5 marks BTC. Or if you prefer, 5 marks towards the driver's side.

The HO firing order is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8.
Non HO firing order is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8

it looks like the harness was cut off at the firewall. You might get lucky by pulling the passenger side kick panel to see if they left the computer in there. If that's the case, replace the engine harness for $150 and you'll have half the battle won.

You can just look at the plug wires in lieu of pulling a cover.

non h.o. is 15426378.

h.o. is 13726548. Just remember to swap the "54" and the "37".. that's the difference. I was shown that 20 yrs ago and for some reason it stuck.

We have that firing order to thank for the "Mustang sound".

I had a good day today. I fixed my power steering pump leak. The o-rings in the outlet where the hose connects were worn. I also installed new rear shocks. I couldn't believe how shot the old ones were. And lastly I installed a new key cylinder in the trunk so it now opens and closes like it should.

Next up is to fix the emergency brake, install new front shocks, lower ball joints, and sway bar bushings.

So I have a question for you guys. Right now their is a breather instead of an oil fill cap on the drivers side valve cover. On the passenger side their is some type of vent with a tube that looks like it goes into the back of the carb. My issue is the breather lets out some smoke. Its not terrible but it kinda smells and is a bit of an annoyance. If I really get on it I will see some smoke coming out of the cowl hood. My neighbor said to just plug it off but I don't want to ruin anything.

So can I get rid of the breather? I tried searching and it is a bit confusing.

The breather vents the crank case pressure and typically a little bit of oil will get pushed out too. You do not want to plug it. Get a breathable catch can and run the lines from the VC's to it. The can will catch any oil and vent the fumes. Some others just put the mini filters on the VC's with a sweat band wrapped around them to keep the smoke to a minimum.

Catch Can! Great idea. It had a mini filter on it but oil was coming out of it. So I bought a different style and it is working much better as far as not letting oil out.
