Throttle Body, Cai, And Maf Question With My 92

So I just bought this 92 5.0. He said it has a larger throttle body and it obviously does but the cold air intake on it is hideous (taped up randomly and just ugly). So I'm going to buy a new CAI. I can buy a CAI and not have to worry about fitting issues with the larger throttle body right? And doesn't the MAF need to be matched with the size of the throttle body? How do I know if they match?

The numbers on top of the MAF are: F3VF-12B579-AA AFH80-01 3G02

Edit: So as i'm doing research on that MAF just now i find that its from a crown vic for 24# injectors. The car runs fine. It has a lumpy cam so sometimes as its warming up it will die if i don't rev it up a bit. But other than that it runs great. I'm getting really confused. The guy I bought it from didn't do the build. So he had no idea what was done to it. All i'm trying to do is buy a new cold air intake and its way more difficult than it should be.

That should fit just fine. However that kit has the filter inside the engine bay right next to the engine, headers, ect, ect,.. As we all know its HOT in the engine bay therefore it will in-take hot air.
I recommend this one:BBK Mustang Cold Air Intake 1557 (86-93 5.0L) - Free Shipping
It will keep the filter inside the fender where the Ford engineers originally designed it to be. Therefore It will then be sourcing colder air like it should be.
Good Luck

Oh I forgot. You mentioned your meter is for 24lb injectors and your engine doesn't run well when warming up. Question: Are your injectors "blue"? Typically 24's are blue in color. If your meter is calibrated for 24's but running stock 19lb or larger than 24 injectors that can definitely cause issues.

Good Luck

ok. first thing first

as mentioned check the color of the injectors. If they are orange/yellow they are 19#, if blue 24#. Also check the EEC, located in the passenger kick panel. It will have a large sticker on it that says A9L, A9P, are for a stock 58MM mustang MAF with 19# injectors X3Z is for the Cobra with a 70MM MAF and 24# injectors . You car will not run correctly with larger injectors/MAF and the stock EEC or vice versa.

For a CAI the stock CAI with a K&N panel fileter works about as well as any aftetermarket one. Most people install aftermarket CAI for the looks. On an otherwise stock motor, save your money and put on the stock part with the K&N.

That's one of the Injectors

The OEM Ford MAFs are not calibrated to injector size. The injector sizing is done in the computer’s internal programming. Aftermarket MAF’s “lie” to the computer in an attempt to fool the computer into changing the injector pulse on timing to match the increased airflow.

The exception to the above statements is if you have an aftermarket tuner system such as Moates Quarter horse, Tweecer, or similar device. Then you can alter the computer's MAF transfer function table to match whatever MAF housing and sensor you have. The tuner device works in conjunction with a high quality Air/Fuel ratio meter so that you can tell what sort of air/fuel mixture you have a any given time.

which is why I told him to check the EEC. He may have a mismatch MAF/ EEC. Wouldn't be the first time someone swapped in larger injectors & MAF, not knowing the EEC is for 19#.

As said, unless you have a piggy back chip or tune on an A9L or A9P, the EEC is calibrated to 19# injectors.

1993 Lincoln Mark 8 MAF

Factory OEM MAF's are not calibrated for a certain size injector. They work in conjunction with the programming in the ECU. That MAF is not really ideal for the Mustang and you should probably look into swapping it out for one of the approved MAF's
