Help! Car Stalling, Sputtering, Died!

I've had my car almost 2yrs now with no major issues. Me and the hubby took it for a drive today (2.5 hrs total), car was fine. We were about a mile or two from home, in downtown stop and go traffic, and it started acting like it was out of gas, sputtering until it just quit in the middle of traffic. Have half a tank of gas. We pushed it to side of road and after sitting about 5 minutes, it starts again. We get just a little further, it does same thing. This went on for about 3 more times till we made it home. Hubby says its getting gas but we haven't checked anything else yet. He knows basic mechanic skills only. So plz do me the favor of speaking clearly with no abbreviations! Lolz. Any help on what the problem could be would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Will it idle by itself? And is it the gt? If it's not idling on its own, meaning you have to give it gas to keep it running could be the idle air control valve. My towncar and97 gt both just got new ones.

my guss is fuel ilter needs replacing, and possibly fuel pump failing
Ok, thanks for helping me out. I'll probably go ahead and change the fuel filter anyway, just because it hasn't been changed since I've owned the car. And it's the cheapest way to start. I really hope its not fuel pump. I've had too many of those go out in the past! I'll make sure to give an update on what's going on...
Love this forum BTW, I've fixed a few things on my car by myself just by reading some of the threads. Makes a girl feel a little empowered, lolz!

I read online that something in the tank can break away and Float around which can become stuck in fuel line then when pump is not on it'll float back up and do the same thing over again.
