Build Thread Enola- Finishing touches

Have no doubt I plan to see this SC build thru to the end. Today I pulled the SC off to replace the leaky long tubes and discovered this.

that's a hole burned into the bypass tube.. it still made 3lbs of boost. I was scratching my head trying to figure out why I got an abrupt pressure drop from 6 to 3. This will require some re-engineering, hopefully I will have more clearance with the shorty headers.
Also I snagged some 1/8th inch plate steel from work and my 3" ss exhaust bends came in. With this I plan to make some adapters and eliminate all the rubber bends in my piping. The outcome will be one tb before the SC. Without an intake tract that will flatten out under vacuum.

On another sidetrack idea, a waste gate on the pressure side of the SC would be a cool idea. That way I can run my smallest pulley and regulate boost to whatever I want. The idea was to add 1psi at a time for tuning the boost ve tables. It's a pita to constantly change pulleys. Any thoughts??
That should work on the exact same principle as a turbo, only w/o all the heat.

Advice.... buy a desoldering gun you will thank me. Getting the 60pin to separate from the old ecu in one piece was well difficult. There were expletives involved. In the end I was victorious. I will pin it out later after I do some research. I would like to use the stock baro for real time correction, all I would need to do is pin it to the "baro" slot on my ms. Lol you would think that is easy but I need to be sure it will play nice first.

You should not use a soldering gun of any kind on a PCB. A pen soldering iron is what is prescribed. A 60W iron with a small solder tip that has been filed and seasoned, make the task much much easier.

I also prefer solder braid to a desoldering tool.

Yyyyup

Good advice, about 3 weeks late though. It's already built and in the car.:p

Yeah... Sorry man. I don't get to all of the threads that I have marked to look at, as often as I'd like. :(

I'll say this for ya though.... It had to have taken some saint quality patience to solder that thing together with a gun. lol

Hey... On a side note:

If you think it's something that you would do again, USED Weller 60 watt irons are generally the deal of the century solderers. They're cheap and if generally cared for, will be handed down by your kids to your grand kids.

The two that I own are both older than MadMike. hehehe

Holler at me if you have difficulty finding good instructions for shaping and seasoning a solder tip. Below is a link for a great set of set of instructions for tip prep prior to soldering. Even old timers can be reminded of a few basic now and then. :)

It also has a really good picture of what a filed and prepped solder tip should look like. If you look closely at the image of the tip that has been wiped clean of solder, you will see that the copper in the tip is actually exposed. This is how it should be if you want excellent heat transfer. Of course, you would tin this tip before applying to components. When it's hot and clean though, that is what it should look like.

Waste gate is on its way with a manual boost controller.

I hate the time change. By the time I pull in my driveway after 10hrs in whatever chemical plant hell I was working in, it's too late to do anything to the car. This Saturday is going to be wide open, I hope to get the headers on and start my new ic piping.

Got the headers on and re-pullied the sc. Man a 1.9" pull is tiny, put the stock alt bracket back on and used the aftermarket piece (with some modifications) as a mount for bracing of the SC mount. Pics to come it's too dark out now.

It has been awhile since I heard shorty headers, they sound kinda pingy..... I know my timing is good I verified it... weird maybe it's just me. used to longtubes.

On a side note, just blipping the throttle in the driveway saw 5psi. Lol that is promising.:D

I am going to do the waste gate thing on my build as well, but with an electronic controller. Just pulled the S/C off today to start the process. It will be interesting to see how your set up works compared to what I plan on doing.

Well considering I do everything only armed with knowledge from google, youtube, and insight from here. With little to no prior experience and teaching myself how to do everything along the way..... yours will probably turn out better. Lol. But hey, I'm getting there. my next car won't look so much like a hack job.

The important thing is that you learn and grow from the experience. You will have actually have "done it" unlike all of the other internet "experts" who will be more than happy to share their "knowledge" Lol. Plus with the next build it will all come together and you will be amazed about how much easier it was to get the results that you were aiming for. I would rather learn by doing, than buy a completed car that I had no clue to how it really worked. BTW, I have not done a waste gate on a S/C car, let alone a turbo car, so I will be learning on the fly as well.

I'm having some strange issues with the car. With brand new tr5ix iridium plugs (the 8 each ones). It fouled 4 of them in 10 minutes, this is where it gets wierd. Only 4 of them fouled and they are all wired to one injector output on the ms I built. The other 4 look new, but when I pull the plug wires on the carbon fouled plugs the car starts to miss worse. When I pull a plug on one that looks new there is no change. WTF? Now I'm confused and pissed off.

So I checked for spark, I have spark on all 8. Then I checked for voltage At the injectors, I get a voltage spike on them when they fire I checked 2 from each injector circuit.

I don't know where to go from here, it seems that either the ms is bad or I got 4 bad injectors and "just happened" to put them all on one circuit (not likely).

Now it seems that I need to pull the ms apart desolder the injector jumpers and swap the two circuits and see if the problem follows, this would not be so bad except that all the spark plugs must be replaced again for this test to be legit AND I have to pull the SC out to get at 3 of them.:bang: (you would think that the idiot who designed this thing would have left more room to get at them).

Got it figured out. The guy doing the tuning has no idea what he was doing........ and set stuff up wrong. So I fired me. Now I'm doing it myself. :O_o: wait what....

Anywho she is running amazing, still tuning drove her around for 45mins today data logging.
Got the second tensioner in there and the wastegate, it works well although it is undersized (38mm) should have ordered a 45 or larger. Saw 5.6# of boost on the logger from my run today. That's my lowest boost setting, should see 11 full tilt but with belt slip maybe 9..

It is just rigged together right now while I get some issues worked out (wanted to make sure this setup worked before dishing out a lot of money) now I can move forward with confidence that this system will perform.

Pictures of my ghetto rigging soon no daylight left. Maybe even a video of the car running too.

You'll get this one cleaned up, I'm sure of it. One thing at a time and you are already on the highest priority item. :nice:

Buuuuuuuuullllll-chit. You don't get off that easy. What bone head thing did you do/not do that you're not tellin! LOL

OK ok..... in the tune I set up two tables, one for cruise and one in boost. Weeelllll what I did not do is see the instructions (the ones in bold next to the setting) that says dual table use...... so 4 injectors were setup on the cruise table and 4 were on the boost table, all the time. Made it run like chit.
Now that I reread the instructions, I have table switching setup so that all 8 are on the cruise table then when it sees boost it switches over to the boost table.
Still trying to wade thru all the software settings and keep my head above water, I think I got it figured out now. Boy I felt stupid when I saw those instructions in big bold letters.
