Build Thread The Hoopty Chronicles - New House, New garage, New Car?

I don't mean to derail the thread here, but why was that such a good thing? I feel like most people prefer switching to MAF. I only ask because my car is currently SD and I was contemplating switching to MAF at some point in the future. I guess SD might be simpler from a tuning perspective, but I don't know what other benefits you guys see. Feel free to PM me instead if you prefer not having this discussion here.

For an application that still uses the stock computer, a MAF is definitely the way to go. No doubt about that.

Once you make the move to an aftermarket ECU, speed density is just an overall better way to tune. You tune based off rpm and manifold pressure. It eliminates a lot of the problems and variables that can be introduced when you have the MAF measuring the amount of air entering the engine.

The factory maf setup is more adaptable to mods without tuning than the factory SD system. Once you go standalone though, the maf is just another restriction (and another hassle), and you're doing custom tunes anyway.

Thanks for the clarification guys.

Drove it around some yesterday and to work this morning. Can't say enough about how well it drives and how smooth it idles. Anyone considering MS, it's well worth the effort. :nice:

So what was the final turning point? I know you were having issues, but I seem to have missed where you figured it out. Glad you got it running.
I didn't have the timing in the software synced to the actual timing.
You have to set the base timing at 10° with the A9L, then install the MS and see where the timing is with the timing light. In my case, it was advanced like 40° - no joke. So I had to adjust the trigger angle offset in the software until I measured 10° with the timing light.

Setting the initial timing with my Holley was the biggest PITA ever. @84Ttop remembers how those first 2.5 hours at the shop went when we were trying to get my car to start. I aged greatly that day.

You have the PIMP already?
He has the one I bought and then sold him, LOL.

In the end, I'm happier with the PNP. I can run a few other things that the PiMP couldn't (or the guys didn't feel like jacking with). Case and point - I want to run a crank trigger, LS coils, and delete the distributor. Very easy on MS. The guys at PiMP kinda shrugged and kicked at the dirt some.

As for why I want to run that setup - Because I can .:D

Also:

Good news - I just scored a set of 1.7 ratio roller rockers for $40.
Bad news - there's only 15 of them and I can"t find out who makes them, so this may require some creative genius on my part.

DIS for the win. So much cleaner than running a distributor. Not sure why they never rolled it out for the 94/5 gt. Why not run coil packs instead of going with the ls mounting style?
