95 Mustang Gt Upgrade Question

So under normal operating conditions what determines when the computer will switch from being open-looped to close looped; allowing the computer to alter the A/F mixture?

@Rev Yeah I've read conflicting information about the tunes; like most things on the internet no one really agrees. I should've just gone for a self-tuner but I was worried about damaging my vehicle. Foolishly I believed that someone selling a product like that would have some sort of knowledge of what they were doing, and would be concerned with actually providing a quality product so they would be less likely to cause damage to my vehicle. Now I'm more inclined to think Bama knows that they're not capable of delivering on all that they promise; and just want to get paid.

Maybe I'm jaded in that regard, oh well live and learn.

I followed your instructions Joz, unplugged the battery and O2 sensors and waited an hour to start the car. It's idling steady and strong in park at around 850-900 rpm; almost no surging at all. However when I shift it into gear the RPM drops very low, between 500 and 600 and the car very obviously wants to stall. It for the most part can stay running; I haven't had it stall yet but it's come very close as I'm watching the dash lights and head lights flicker as the rpms rise and fall while the car is in gear.

I've left the O2s unhooked for the moment, and I plan to park the car tomorrow and remove the chip and send it in for further tuning. I tried all 3 tunes as well as the stock EEC settings; and the car runs for the most part the same; it runs the best on the 'economic' setting and the worst on the stock EEC. I believe that the timing is too retarded without the bama chip; as the car doesn't even want to start up without assistance via the throttle on the stock eec settings. I don't really want to change the timing to 13 degrees as it was prior to the chip only to have to reset it to 10 degrees when the chip returns, so I'm probably going to just park it while I wait.

My current thinking is that the car's idle RPM needs to be set much higher than it currently is, and I need them to disable the adaptive learning at idle as you mentioned Joz. I'll check this thread again before I call them tomorrow and see if anything is posted; if you have any other advice or information you think might be useful to convey to bama please let me know. I think they'll be able to get the tune eventually, but without the assistance of people who have had and solved these problems I don't think they're going to get it. They need very specific instructions I imagine to know what to tweak and what not.

Anyways, thanks for the help guys

the t4m2 / u4p2 base tunes will get you going in no time

That is super-cool (definitely merits a post all its own, even a sticky). (THIS is one of those "remote professional tuners" I'd mentioned in this thread who actually tune via datalog and interaction with the car, not the "load and pray" methodology of some of the big brands.) Are you still doing that work @Decipha? And where can a guy find you online if they were interested?

So I recently purchased a 95 GT a few months ago with some basic mods done to it; and after some thought decided to pull the motor and upgrade it the best that I could afford with my brother.

I'm very inexperienced with this sort of thing, but my brother has done it several times now; three times with fox body mustangs and once with a 69 Chevelle; so he's much more capable than I am in this field.

I pretty much told him that I want to do it once, and that I didn't want to end up pulling the motor back apart next year because I wasn't satisfied with the performance. I'm more of a one and done type of person, I don't like wasting money upgrading the same component repeatedly chasing horse power.

So he put together a pretty reasonable package we feel, and we're getting close to getting the motor back into the car and buttoned up so we can run it for the first time. I'm a little concerned that the stock computer / tune could prove to be a problem though; so I thought I should ask someone with more experience with the 95 mustangs while there's still some time before it goes in.

I've read elsewhere that the 95 computers are very difficult to deal with compared to the older fox style computers, most especially for what sort of mods I'm doing.

I'm swapping from stock heads to GT40-X aluminum heads, stock length hardened push rods, a new comp cam with matching lifters, 1.6 roller rockers, a typhoon intake, K&N cold air intake, upgraded throttle body, 24 lbs injectors, upgraded mass air flow sensor, upgraded stock converter and a upgraded fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator.

I believe that's the total list of current mods we're installing; and I apologize for not having specific model numbers for each part. I'm just trying to keep up with him, and this is all a little overwhelming.

So with what little information I'm able to provide, is there any danger of running my motor with the stock 95 tune? I've been reading like crazy just trying to familiarize myself with this; because I'm really nervous that something will go wrong and all that money and work will go down the tubes and I'll have no car to boot.

I totally understand paying to have it dyno tuned will improve its performance, but will it run 'decent' with a stock tune until I can afford to pay to get it dyno tuned? Will there be any danger of running it with a stock tune, or will it just be performing below its potential? Any information you guys can offer is greatly appreciated; thank you very much.

I have a similar set up and also new to the 94-95 mustang. Mine in a 95 GTS with 306, gt40x heads, e cam, 1.7 RR, trick flow track heat with 75mm t body. 24 lb injectors with supporting mass air. Mine ran really rough killed at idle you could drive it but ran very rough. It came with a tweecer (OLD Tuning tech) was plugged in but not tuned. After a month of research of OLD threads I've got her running perfect idle at around 750 and smooth through rpm. Running Cobra J4j1 modified tune
