Greetings from the Dirty South ! I started the new year out right by purchasing an 86 GT ( money pit) , and I suspect it is going to be a long hard road to rebuild. Not new to the game of wrenches, but time has slipped away since my last bout . The car is running , BUT , it is a bit shop worn. To give you an idea, it saw life as a highway patrol car to start with. Right now, it drools oil and smokes on acceleration but still steps out pretty good. Me like !
I changed the valve cover gaskets and that helped but then I noticed the dreaded rear main leak. Drat ! I figured on rebuilding he engine when I found another that had been recently rebuilt . The deal sounded good and for $600, is way under what it would cost me to do my engine. Plans are to fetch motor this weekend and go from there. From what I can gather, the block is from somewhere in the 70's , GT 40 heads, roller cam, steda rockers, bored .40 over, some kind of steel crank , blah blah. Will know more when I eyeball it. Motor has about 3000 miles on it and held together, so I figure it will last. Fellow that built it seemed to know his business and I'm not too worried about that. Time will tell.
I really like the car and it is a hoot to drive, but is going to have to quit marking it's territory ! I will try to post updates as I go along.
Peace
