How Fast

I have a 1988 gt 5.0, it's the speed density, I'm going to switch it over to mass. My friend has a 1987 formula 350, tells me it current stage of my car he can beat me in the 1/4 mile. So this is where I ask for your help before taking challenge, of coarse I'll take it even if I lose . I currently did new clutch, I put shorty hooker headers, I have not cat magnaflow exhaust, hpipe. What do you guys think car with those mods will run in the 1/4 mile? High 13 ? 14?

We have both ran track before. I'm running street tires. Besides nitrous what else can I do to get into the 13s , my plan so far is gt40 intake upper and lower, a9l computer with mass air, 36lbs injectors. Now should I go with the e303 with stock heads, or gt40 heads or aftermarket heads. Let me know what you guys think

Your friend is overconfident. It's going to be a drivers race. The 350 might make a little more torque than the 5.0L HO, but the vehicle weight and that slush box automatic is going to kill him. These cars were always a drivers race on the street throughout the '80's, with the majority of the wins going to the Mustang. If I were you and you plan on running it at the track, your first mods should be gears and tires. A set of 3.73's and a good set of drag radials will knock half a second off your ET's.....easy!

As far as parts.....if you're trying to do it on a budget, hit the local junk yard and pick up the heads and intake off of a 5.0L Explorer. They came stock with GT40 (or GT40P, depending on the year) iron heads and a cast aluminum version of the more expensive and rare GT40 intake. Spend some money on better valve springs and a good 3-angle valve job at a local speed shop, swap out your E303 cam, pick yourself up a 70mm MAF meter from one of the many Ford cars that got them in the '90's and have at it. That's a recipe for an easy low-13-second car all day long.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with intake alone. If you can't afford to do it all at once, keep stock piling parts and cash until you can. Installing these mods one at a time isn't nearly as satisfying as doing them all at once.

If you ever plan on making more N/A power than that....don't bother with the GT40 hardware. Things are going to start costing you money from here....

And you're gonna do all of that before you race him?

If that is what you plan,...whadya spose ol dude has planned to counter yours?

I disagree w/ Brian. An automatic that has had valvebody mods will outperform a novice shifter behind a manual stick. Unless the two of you are buds, and he can stick his head under your hood just as easily as you can do the same to him, then you lay your cards on the table and you race. If you lose, you go home and spend money for next time.

You can come on here asking who'll win, get a dozen statements that you will, and lose just the same despite how much advice you get to the contrary. The Only way to know w/ any degree of certainty is to know how truly fast your car is. Once you know that w/ consistency, then you have a start point.
You've said you've been at the track before,...,.....how fast did you go?
How fast did he go?

Back in the day, a good buddy of mine had a formula 350. We spent a lot of time at the track, and it was always a close race between my '88 AOD, and his car. Now, I was running mid 14's pretty much stock with my car, and it always seemed we were within 0.2 of each other. Once I added 3.73's and a few other minor bolt ons (pullies, K&N, cobra intake) , things swung to my favor and I usually edged him out most of the time.
