Fuel filter relocation?

I recently picked up a 84 fox. Don’t know much about it but it’s not stock from the looks of it. Been going through replacing the fuel system due to it sitting for over 10 years. It was pretty rusty in there. Figured I’d replace the fuel filter along with everything else but I can’t seem to find it. It’s not in the stock location. I’ve followed the lines from the tank to the schrader valve and nothing. My buddy tonight said maybe the fuel filter is connected to the fuel rail? Is that an option? I don’t have a picture but there is something that resembles what might be a fuel filter connected to the fuel rail on the left side towards the back of the engine. Is that what I’m looking for? Any help helps. I can add more pictures tomorrow

An 84 Fox? Is that correct?

That engine and harness are all out of an 87+. I mean... I've seen swaps before nut the the A/C and smog too? :O_o:
84 Mustangs came from the factory with a carburetor.

Mods I see:

C&L elbow and filter
Cobra upper and lower
Brand X Caster/Camber plates


What's the rest of the car look like?

Tensioner, AC clutch and lines are all pre-86 style for sure.

Someone EFI swapped that '84. That's a :poo: ton of cobwebs. The thing mounted to the fuel rail on the backside is the fuel pressure regulator.

IIRC, in 1984 the fuel filter was in the engine bay. With that being an EFI swap, i would bet $1 it does not have a fuel filter at all. I bet they removed all the carb fuel lines and just plumbed in the EFI stuff and there's no filter.

I can see the lines in the photo on the rail but don't see any fuel filter in that pic. You'll have to just dig around a bit. If there is no filter, i wouuld pull the fuel rain off and make sure that's all clear of rusty fuel otherwise those injectors will clog quickly, if they aren't already.

That's correct. It was actually at the carb itself.... that little bronze filter where the fuel line goes into the carb.

They (the swapper) would have had to change the fuel tank and pump also, right? And revise the fuel lines. While they were back there doing all that, woulda thought they may have added a filter there too. Apparently not!
 
I would say that the engine and accessory package on the front of the motor are all 1984.

Most likely its just an injection swap. The fuel pump could be an external but most were in tank. They simply may have not installed a fuel filter but it does need one. Also, if the car was a CFI car would it not have had a lift pump in the tank and then the fuel filter and external high pressure pump on the passenger side frame rail at the back of the car? This is how my '83 T-Bird was but I did not know if that design carried over to the Mustangs.

And forgive my late response as the five posts above mine were added while I was distracted with work...

You guys may know, stock, those carbureted HO's would outrun the fuelies
Used to drive those cop cars around and the Highway Patrol interceptors (doing alignments and checking for vibrations at high speed etc.)
The carb'd ones would do 85mph in second gear
The fuelies would only do 72mph (rev limited)

Looks like they swapped out the radiator shroud and coolant bottle to a later one, in order to move the battery to the driver's side.... in order to make room for the air filter on the passenger side.

And aren't those EFI valve covers?

Is that Cobra intake the one that is semi-valuable to you EFI guys?

Yes, VS the spring locks
The lines bolt to the compressor and the evaporator
The older bolt together stuff never ever leaked as much at the high side condenser connectors or the high side evap connector
Even with just one o ring, the bolt together design smashes the o ring and they do not leak for 10 years
