So I had a impulse buy and bought some 18x8.5 mustang wheels for my Ranchero. I have disk brakes on the front and the inside of the rim is pushed up against what I think is the top of the upper control arm. I dont know what this part is called but it looks like a small half bubble on top with bolts on each side. it looks as if its a protective covering. Anyways I ground it down a bunch. Almost all the way through actually. I am wondering if I weakened anything. Here is a picture. I darkened the rest of the picture and inside the circle is the section I ground down... what s this called?

That's where your ball joint is housed. Its basically a pocket for the top of your ball joint to fit in. As long as you don't remove too much material you'll probably be fine. Did you try to return the wheels and get the correct offset and backspacing? Or try a spacer depending on how your wheel sits on there now?
