1968 Fastback Exhaust Decisions ( Jba Headers And X Pipe)

Ok I have a 289 and I'm looking to beef up the exhaust. I already have a set of JBA 6651 S long tube tri y stainless steel headers and the matching 6651x X pipe. That is where the decision comes in, I like the idea of a side pipe and also keeping with same manufacture so I found the JBA 50-2651 but it seems to be a go to part to make a eleanor mustang which has the fiberglass covers. I'm not going to cover them. Is this common or is there a kit available that is better or cheaper or both. Ha Ha. Maybe just get a local muffler shop to make up something. This JBA 50 -2651 looks to be a simple bolt on that I can do myself. At @ $800 is looks expensive to me or am I missing something?

Is this what you're after?

(the photo was supposed to display here, but for some reason didn't cooperate after a couple of trys....
It was the first pic under a google image search for "68 mustang side pipes", it was white..... )

I suppose you could have an exhaust shop bend some pipe to work, then buy some chrome covers like these:

I'd make sure they use some quality piping like stainless or you run the risk of it looking like crap after a while. But I'm sure you'll want to cover them somehow or risk people burning themselves. And what muffler do you want to run? If you were looking to run something like a glass pack, you could put them under the covers which would shorten the length of pipe needed to do something like this as well as possibly eliminate having to buy a special muffler. Some manufacturers also makes a "complete" side pipe kit, such as chrome pipes and covers if desired, but I'm sure you'd still have to have an exhaust shop bend everything that's under the car. As I'm sure you've already shopped around, here is what Summit offers under a basic search for "side pipes":

Now, my personal opinion: I'd just run a "standard" exhaust with the pipes exiting either as dumps at the axle or out the back of the car. It's easier, cheaper, and (IMO) looks better. Running full length headers and an X pipe, it sounds like you're going to have a little bit of pipe snaking around under your car. If you just want the exhaust to exit from the side, you could have a shop bend a tail pipe to exit before the rear wheel like the 70 Challenger T/A. It could be a feasible trade off of side exit exhaust and not having exhaust pipe snaking around under your car from front to back then back to the front to run side pipes which then exit at the back. Of course this is all before the axle as well.....

(On a side note, I would LOVE to have one of these too!! )
