Converting Aod To Floor Shift

I have a aod out of a truck that I need to convert to floor shift for my swap. What I don't understand is that the shift lever on the outside of the trans will spin in circles.. is it supposed to do that? I'll be pulling the pan soon but I have no idea what I'm looking at. Any advice?

It'd help to know what kind of vehicle it is going into.
