What Do You Do (or Supposed To Be Doing)

Construction Engineer, my wife is a Facilities Management Engineer for a prestigious Hospital.
We are engineers by title only, we are actually technologists (Me Building Science, her Mechanical).
We have no kids, live well below our means and are quite happy with simple things... I shop Target she has much more class and shops JC Penny... no fancy "name" stuff here.
I grew up working construction (father, uncle and both grandfathers owned construction companies).
Put myself through college working in a ski shop in the winter, a bicycle shop in the summer, and of course working construction during spring/summer/Christmas breaks when I was back at home.
I was an envelope specialist, detailer and construction manager in the architectural word for 21 years, now work for a well respected construction company.
I'm 48, my wife is... younger...

Education does not make a man smart. One of the smartest men I even met laid brick for a living...
Amen . As for myself I still have many years of learning ahead but I have no formal education outside of trade school in diesel mechanics after highscool. I agree with you though 100 percent. One of the smartest men i have ever met was my ex g/f of 6 years father. That guy barely graduated high school and is well off all because of his own physical labor and dedication. Owns one of the biggest groups of commercial ice cream routes in NYC.

CNC programmer/setup guy/machinist, now working in aerospace doing a lot of quick-turn short run stuff (prototypes, repair parts, refits, etc.), but worked in a job-shop that did mostly bio-med for 3 or so years before that. May end up doing something else before too long though, we got bought out last year, and now they just merged us with another company and forced us to go union and lost all our seniority because of it.

Damn Chuck, that sucks, hope it works out for you. The union thing wouldn't be terrible if it weren't for the seniority issue.

Your job sounds a lot like my oldest boy's job. Ironically, you're close in age, he's 31.

He's gotten to the point he's considering trying to start his own shop, just that little issue of getting past that freakin' ultra high cost of the machinery!!!

Good luck to you Chuck, be tough, it'll work out for your good in the end.

I sling Cisco gear for a VAR. Just got back from. I am 44 turning 45 soon ... OLD BALLS!

I am officially a freelance Musician and Band Director. But to get there I was a gopher/apprentice in the family plumbing and insurance businesses, Windows Tech Support, a certified counter man, and parts department manager at a GM dealership.I started working on my Dad's Granada at age 12. I used to flip houses in the summer (and sometimes school year), besides being active in a car club and community organizations. No wonder I feel 147 years old most days now that Arthritis has slowed me down.

I'm a software developer for a non-profit consortium, and get to work from home. (Also known as "living at the office".)

My driver's license tells me I'm 46, but I can't be that old. My son was just born not too long ago... wait, he's moved out of the house already. OK, maybe my driver's license isn't that far off.

My license says about the same actual age but my younger kid is going into 4th..Some of my classmates have grandkids about the same age as my kids. I was just glad to ditch the infant seats so we fit in a Mustang again.

I'm a part time package handler at a large (brown) shipping company. I load semi trailers at way too early in the morning. Good benefits, and a good workout.

The rest of my day I'm at the family business, which is a sign shop. We do signs, banners, vehicle lettering, vehicle wraps, apparel, business cards, etc... Pretty much anything you could put your logo on, we can make.

I'm 30.
