Pic a cam for my 408 build!

408 Stroker build from a 351W block
AFR 205 heads
Eagle cast crank and forged rods
SRP forged pistons (10.1:1 compression)
Comp 1.6 roller rockers
Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap intake
Holley 950 CFM carb
Mallory disty with 6-AL HyFire box

This will hook to a C4 trans with a 2800 converter, 3.5" alum driveshaft and a Strange 9" rear with 3.70 gears.

Thoughts on what cam would work good for this? Needs to hydraulic, not solid..

Something that makes good power but isn't a pain in the butt to drive on the street.

hey Steve, is it a late model factory roller block or an earlier block. that will make a difference.

i'm going to assume it's an earlier non roller block and you'll be doing the roller conversion on it.

i would use a comp extreme energy retro-fit hyfraulic roller, part number XR-288RF-HR specs are 236/240 duration @.050 and .555/.576 lift on a 110 degree LSA

Not to threadjack to a classified ad but I'm going to have my cam/lifters out of my 342 FS soon with almost those exact specs. (Tad more lift and 114 Center) Just PM if your interested and I can give you further info.

Yep, it's part of my job description. ;)

I wouldn't use a part just because it's free or cheap, but if it's good for the build then I might as well. I spend quite a bit on car parts as well, but I generally need to do a story a month and I would go broke if I had to buy all the parts.

Back when I bought all my stuff I was lucky to do an upgrade every few months. This car is on an "accelerated schedual" .. lol
 
I just built and installed this same (408 stroker) in my '67 fastback.
We went all roller, AFR heads, Eagle bottom with h beam rods etc.............
heres' 2 things to think about
1....you won't get the hood closed with that Airgap intake and the Holley carb....we had to switch to a Edelbrock Torquer 2 low profile (2500-5500 rpms) but that allowed us to stay with the Holley carb (Edelbrock carb. is about 1 1/4" lower).
2...be carefull and don't get too lumpy with the cam....lots of unburned fuel fumes come out the tailpipes
3.....this engine produces "a lot" of heat....need aluminum rad or 4 row copper to cool (even up here in Canada).....
4...the Holley 650 is the right carburetor for this engine (we tried the 750 and had to take it off...its too big..the 650 cfm is still good to 6000 rpms (we used a ford h.d. mechanical pump)....if the engine is spending all its time at the far end of a 1/4 mile track a 700 cfm might be better but for everyday street rodding the 650 cfm is definitely it (we asked Holley....and they gave us the correct stats.
no 2 ways about any of the above
note: this engine runs hard (rip your face off hard) with instant throttle response and gets better mileage than my 289 did on the highway.

I would think I would have less hood clearance problems with my Fairlane, especially since I have the higher GT Torino hood.

That cam should make 500/500 in a 408. EngineFactory.com sells a 351W with that exact same cam, RPM Performer heads, and an RPM Air Gap intake and it makes 435 hp at 5600 rpm.

With those 205 AFRs and the added displacement, that cam would make some serious numbers.
 
If the retrofit cam is a reduced base circle piece (and I believe it is), I would pass. Buy the good Crane link bar lifters and then get a standard base circle cam. I would think that the XE282-HR would work fine. If you want a broad torque curve, leave it at teh standard 112LSA. If you want to peak the the power more, have it ground on a 109LSA.
