I recently purchased a 1990 Mustang GT 5.0 with a 5-speed. I have only owned a automatic in the past and my question has to do with the clutch. The clutch is smooth but it catches very late (High on the pedal). I took the mustang to a ford mechanic and he told me they are all like that.....when the clutch is stock. What is your opinions? Are all the clutches like this unless you get an adjustable cable? Just curious. Thanks

tuff one to answer, since this is mostly by feel. the main thing is you want have play in the pedal, reach down with your hand and the pedal should move freew/o effort about 1-2" even bounce if you let it. the pedal should get hard right around the hight of the brake pedal has you push down on it. start the car and let the clutch up, if it lets out near the top pretty much at the brake pedal hieght that's no good and chances are the clutch is bad or cable is out of adjustment. it may feel to high to you but not to me or others remember it's not going to give off the floor (it's hard to describe).

It should give about 1/2 to 3/4 off the floor. you don'y want it grabbing of the floor (adjusted to loose) or way up high (adjutsed to tight) if you have a adjustable cable and it's adjust right meaning your clutch still wont operate correctally the clutch is probally bad.

also search on hear for clutch quadrants, fire wall adjusters and for the most on here will tell you to use a oem cable most other brands are crappy and strech really bad. I run a maximim motorsports quadrant, fwa and oem cable and love it.

if your running a stock setup ( stock cable. pawl and quadrant)

pull up on the clutch pedal, its self adjustable and may help any adjustment problems. but i am not sure on yours, a high grabbing pedal is a sign of a tight adjustment. the stock adjustable setup is designed to compenstate for slack when the stock cable wears and stretches.

but you may try and see. if no luck it may be your just not used to it. you may find someone with a 5 speed mustang and ask to sit in it and feel its clutch and compare.

if not then opt for the fully adjustable setup. i run an aftermarket quadrant and adjustable cable and it works great!

Thank you all for the above information. I felt that the information that I was given was not accurate. I just ordered an adjustable cable to help solve the problem. Thanks for the posts.

If you are going to replace the cable it would be a good idea to get the upgraded clutch quadrant and firewall adjuster too. You may also want to inspect your clutch fork, etc. when replacing he cable. firewall adjuster will allow you to put the clutch disengage where you want it in the pedal release.

Is that a shovel in your hand? Why are you digging up dry, dead, corpses of very old posts - Jul 4, 2007?
The original poster has probably gotten rid of the car by now.
