Stock MAF with upgraded Throttle body?

Hi everyone,

This is my first ever post. I have a 1991 Mustang 5.0 LX. I'm looking to increase the air flow to the engine. First of all, I would like to change the original intake for a cold air intake. I will also change the original throttle body for a 70mm. That said, should I upgrade the original 55mm MAF? I think that keeping the original would create a restriction... Am I right?

Generally, doing this mod on an otherwise stock motor will result fewer drive-ability manners and little or no increase in power.

That said, should I upgrade the original 55mm MAF?

It would be pointless to consider without upgrading this and either porting or replacing the upper/lower manifolds.

You would shift the bottle neck to this point. The current bottle necks are the intake and heads.
 
A cold air intake is a waste, you will gain virtually nothing on a stock engine. If you haven't done headers and exhaust, that is where I would start. If you have, then look at a better intake manifold, mass air meter and throttle body.

I would hazard to guess that [something] has already been done to the exhaust :O_o:

There is no advantage to either. If you are looking to get some cheap fun out of the car, don't start with the engine. Swap the rearend gear to a 3.73:1. That will give you 10 times more fun than a MAF or throttle body swap.

I can say with certainty, swapping the stock maf for a 75mm pro M with 19's works.
.2 every time.
I was told back in the day by credible sources, then I and a few friends track tested it at atco.
Swapping the meter between cars netted .2 nearly every time.
Not bad for a $100 used meter.
Is .2 setting the world on fire? No, but for 5 minutes worth of work and a 100 bucks (used), why not?

I actually have a 3.55 gear. The 3.73 was removed a couple weeks after it was installed. Althought it was fun on take offs, I didn't like it as much at 80 mph on the highway. (I do highway a lot)

I got a 70mm MAF housing from a 1994-1995 T-Bird, and a sensor from a 1994-1995 Mustang. Put the two together and it looks factory and runs fine. I'm pretty sure I gained some power on an otherwise stock engine. You could also install a 5.0L Explorer throttle body. Those are 65mm.

If it hasn't already been done, remove the intake silencer from airbox.
 
Intake, heads, long tube headers, and a cam are where the power is. If these are done I would start thinking about a tb and Bigger maf.

I'm on the fence with that statement.
It's like saying do everything or do nothing.
My theory is do whatever you like, just do not waste your time pulling the heads and the cam unless you are going to use quality parts. It's just too much work for say gt40 iron heads.

I don't take issue with intakes, meters, Tb's, exhaust etc. People have to start somewhere. And yes some of those things could need to be replaced when you get to heads/cam, but if you purchase wisely most intake parts can be bought and sold at the same price (used of course).

Keep in mind, people should however understand that if you skip the heads/cam you aren't going to get much more than 240rwhp (which isn't terrible since the car only has about 200rwhp to begin with)

As for long tubes, I personally don't like them. Clearance issues, pain to install, mid pipe problems.
I don't see the value on anything other than a stroker and even them I wouldn't use them.

I wasn’t so much saying you have to do them all at once, more that those items are what will bring more power. Not that I’m against new throttle bodies or mafs, it’s just that those alone won’t make much more power. A set of heads will though

I’m probably one of the few people on here who wouldn’t ever buy anything under an 80mm Tb for a stock engine. I don’t see the point of upgrading just to go 10 or 15mm bigger when the larger bore won’t cause any issue.

Any kind of headers except a long tube are a waste of money on almost any engine. Long tube will make more power throughout the entire rpm range, even more at lower engine speeds. This has been proven time and time again I’ve installed a ton of long tube headers, and I’ll agree they are a bitch, but worth it in the end.

I actually prefer the 3.55s myself. I agree on the highway drone with the 3.73:1 gears.
