Progress Thread Snow - 93 GT Vert. My first Ford, Mustang, convertible, ...

Just some random thoughts on my build out:

Stock bottom end including pistons.
Stock trans
In the future upgraded cam, but for now stock
Maximize gt40 heads and upper and lower intake

I guess that puts me under 300rwhp. My target will be over 250.

Regarding money, I’m not rich but I don’t need to budget build. I would rather do it once, and not do it again. That’s what I mean about maximize. I want to build around the gt40 heads and upper/lower intake as they were a gift from my dad (as well as the original car)

On the headers, run a die down the threads on the header studs and get those threads cleaned up. I just bought new nuts at Lowe’s (ran a tap through them) along with heavy flat washers and some lock washers. Has made it a lot easier since when needing to remove them.

If you want to do it once now it the time to put a cam in it with the heads and intakes off. Cam, new lifters, new timing chain assembly, and some gaskets. Again, if you are going to put a cam in it now or later you need to have an idea as to the specs so you put the right springs on the heads now. The TFS replacement springs are supposed to be good to 0.540" lift.

Much easier than I thought. Didn’t need a torch. For the passenger side under sensor did need bendy socket thing with shallow socket.

Funny how they marry up, just a ball joint kinda way.

Went back and read the entire thread. You are going to a lot of trouble to install the GT40 heads and Explorer/Cobra upper and lower not to have TMoss port the lower intake. He ported the Cobra lower on my old 302 and it made a difference. Best way is to email him and ask him what he would charge to port it (moss tpsa@ sbc global. net - remove the spaces). You should also be able to run a set of 1.7 pedestal mount roller rockers and not have piston to valve clearance issues which will pick up a little more hp. Read I said should not have PTV clearance issues but you should always clay the motor. Go hear and start at Post #946:
Just got done emailing TMoss (awesome guy BTW). He stated that "stock GT40 heads flow mid-190 cfm and the stock Cobra intake flows right at 210cfm so there is no pressing need to port your lower right now." Sounds like I wont need to port the lower intake. Will save a couple bucks there!

Reading through folks move to 1.7 rockers. Im having a hard time convincing myself its the way to go, at least for the expense. That said, do I have an option of moving the stock 1.6 rockers to this new setup? Since I have new heads with machining, I am assuming I will need to validate pushrod length anyway?

... been lots of reading/watching today

You really should call Comp Cams and see what cam they recommend for your combo. From there you can see if anyone has a cam for sale that is close to that one as new cams are running about $400 right now. Off the shelf it would be hard to beat a TFS Stage 1 for what you have going.

Thanks for the advice. I really dont want to take the waterpump, crankcase, etc off. If it was already off I would.

Im speculating at some point I will pull the engine. When I do that ill do oil pan, prolly front main, etc. Heck, I may need to pull the engine after fing up this work ;)

Looks like I have a "Ford Racing" lower intake?

Ford Racing

Sold as a kit from the performance catalog from 1998 to 2003, this is a modified Explorer lower intake to fit your fox. It would have the part number like RF-F87E-9K461-BA Which is a direct bolt-on for the Fox Mustang. There’s also a number RF-F2ZE-9K461-AA which is also a valid casting number. (Although I’m not sure if this is FRPP or not)
