Head Change on new Ford 345HP crate engine

I know Ford and other cam mans did their homework when designing their grinds; you're pointing out the obvious to an old school'r. You also have to realize they completed their research to encompass as many 'combo's' as possible; not to OPTIMIZE a certain combo (except for the Ford combo which...

How much is the average cost?

Is the 160$ quote welded in or clamps? Do they exit out the back or dumps? IMO that is kinda high. Why not buy clamps and do it yourself? Just a thought. Maybe try finding a muffler shop that isn't a franchise and the prices are usually lower. At least that has been my experience. That...

Head Change on new Ford 345HP crate engine

So you're basing your opinion on what you 'hear' and not what you've tried? Doesn't sound like your opinion holds much water, not being disrespectful, but what you are stating is an OPINION w/nothing fact based. True? The reason they say the same thing about an off the shelf cam is cause...

Head Change on new Ford 345HP crate engine

Here is the info for Ed Curtis: http://www.flowtechinduction.com/ Since it is a crate motor he might have info on it, if not I'm sure it easily accessible. Ed is a great guy to deal w/. The Z cam is not bad, but as I stated, a very old grind. I also agree w/you D. has a lot of knowledge &...

Head Change on new Ford 345HP crate engine

Remember you're only looking at lift at one point. This can't and doesn't show the difference between the cams. In fact, the LSA's are much different between the F, X, B, & Z so they will react MUCH different in the same motor. Adding the 1.7 rockers to a F will get you more lift, a little...

Head Change on new Ford 345HP crate engine

IMO, keep the heads, upgrade the springs (EdC ramp rates are pretty aggressive) and order a custom cam. The alphabet soup cams are OK, but very antiquated IMO; not saying they won't work, just that there are better cams on the market. Order one from Buddy Rawls or Ed Curtis and you'll be...

    351 blocks

You are probably correct about that. It's 'possible' to make 700hp, but reliability will be a BIG factor IMO. That's why I would lean toward the +500" motor; won't have to spin as high and will be more reliable.

    351 blocks

That's it. Of course there are the SVO blocks, the Dart blocks... but if you don't plan on racin' too heavy don't waste your money. The 90's 351 roller blocks can handle ~700HP if I remember correctly. The non roller will handle 850hp.

    To Supercharge or not

If you have 10k$ for a budget then why pass up on a 514? That motor will make the power you want and LOTS O' torque. Good heads, custom cam, big headers, and you probably won't push the motor near it's limits = more reliable motor. If you want to build the 351 for boost.... go turbo. I...

    Reading Spark Plugs

If you are fine-tuning to the point where you are reading the spark plugs, it can only be done accurately by installing a fresh set after the engine has already been warmed up. The best way to go about doing this is to warm the engine first, and then change to a clean set of plugs. After you...

Thought I knew Something About Cams, But Then I Decided to Get a Roller Block

I'm not a big fan of the alphabet cam, but for your needs they can't be beat. The TFS 1 cam is a more aggressive cam and will also meet your needs. I normally say go custom, but for a DD there are many good off the shelf cams that meet your needs; plus 300$ is probably more than you want to spend.

    Reading Spark Plugs

They don't need a certain miles before you can read them. What are you wanting to read them for? Do you know the general process of setting up, running, and reading?

First time at the track not as good as I had hoped

I thought you prolly knew that :D I agree w/you too; working on the RT will help win races. Like racing itself, seat time will be benificial.
