    NikwoaC's "Commitment Issues" Engine Build

One last thing for today- Here is why I follow LMR on YouTube. They do a great job producing what Fox guys need to keep these cars on the road. When they recently posted about their new firewall/clutch cable reinforcement bracket, I immediately checked my car, and sure enough, my firewall was...

But wait, there's more...! Not actually much more. But, for some of my upcoming plans for the car, I'm installing aftermarket fuel rails. Not so much because I'll need the fuel flow, but because I need the clearance on the throttle body side. Unfortunately, the Anderson Ford Motorsport rails...

    NikwoaC's "Commitment Issues" Engine Build

Some pics of the new flywheel and old clutch (with new friction disc) reinstalled. And finally, with the new bell. I also replaced the pilot and throwout bearings while I was in here. I'm reusing the 39 year old fork and pivot... They are still somehow totally serviceable :)

Making slow but steady progress... Got the new flywheel in and dialed in the concentricity of the TKO bellhousing. This took ENTIRELY too long. As you can see in the video below, it was originally ~.022-.024" (indicator reading) out. About .011-.012" off center. So, I bought .014" eccentric...

    NikwoaC's "Commitment Issues" Engine Build

As a small update- I built a little engine cradle so I can get the engine off the roller stand and start mocking up the bellhousing and getting it concentric to the flywheel. ...I've been traveling a lot, so unfortunately progress is slow

All gun laws are an infringement! :D But unfortunately, no, it's not a machine gun.

Actually... Yes to that second part. Not ready to reveal it yet, but I'm working on something a little different.

Nothing too exciting, but here is the front end of the engine with the new gaskets installed. I have had issues over the years with coolant leaks causing timing cover and water pump bolts to rust, so this time I went all stainless. This tiny mom and pop shop out of PA called Totally Stainless...

    NikwoaC's "Commitment Issues" Engine Build

As for the rear main seal- I'm pretty sure I learned this trick here on StangNet- carefully drive a screw into the old seal and use it to pull it out. Works great. The crank surface at this point is almost 40 years old and with 130K-ish miles, it has some light grooves where the rear main...

    NikwoaC's "Commitment Issues" Engine Build

Here are some shots of the teardown. Oil soaked bellhousing. Roasted flywheel. The pressure plate looks pretty rough too. I'm going to have the flywheel resurfaced and just try to clean up the pressure plate and squeeze another season or two out of it, with a new friction disc. The old...

    NikwoaC's "Commitment Issues" Engine Build

If I were to do it over again, I'd probably either pony up for a TKX or try to find a good deal on a used T56. I probably wouldn't go with a T5 platform.

    NikwoaC's "Commitment Issues" Engine Build

The car has only ever been on summer-type street tires, never been flat-foot shifted, and no, I haven't been to the drag strip since I clocked that 12.9 run a million years ago. To be fair though, I only ever sheared teeth off gears once. 2 of the 4 failures were related to the synchro...

    NikwoaC's "Commitment Issues" Engine Build

Anyway, this brings me to where I am today. As you guys can see from this thread, I built this engine 14 years and about 35K miles of hard use ago. It has held up (surprisingly) very well, but at this point the timing cover gasket and rear main seal have started leaving so much coolant and oil...

This was brought up in my discussions with Steeda. The car has never been in an accident and has never showed any symptoms of having something wrong with the rear end geometry, but I suppose it's possible. I lean toward it being more of an issue with Steeda's bulky and squared-off flange...

    NikwoaC's "Commitment Issues" Engine Build

Technically, all the pivot points in a triangulated 4-link must both pivot and twist as the suspension goes through its travel, forcing the bushings to deform somewhat. So, anywhere you have a poly or rubber bushing, you are creating some "binding" in that sense. Spherical bearings on one end...

    NikwoaC's "Commitment Issues" Engine Build

So, I guess some updates are in order. Yes, as you can see, I still have the car. Since I've taken my sabbatical from StangNet, I've: Converted the front control arms to 2003 Mustang units (specifically from a Cobra, but IIRC they're all the same) and corrected some front end geometry that...
