    Tranny Mystery

The A4LD is a crap transmission. I have one in my 88 and I monitor it weekly. They LOVE to burn up and destroy the overdrive bands. What I would do is check your fluid color, odor, and level first. If anything is wrong correct it. A flush and fill may help it out. To everyone with an A4LD I very...

    More Problems

First thing I would do is pull codes. A failed or failing sensor will store a code in the computer's memory. If there are no codes, I would somewhat suspect either the idle air controller, tfi ignition module, or possibly the ignition switch.

    Idle problems

To me, this sounds like a classic case of a failing ignition module. A jumpy tach and stalling and revving are usually the telltale signs. If you have a 1983-1990, it will be the grey rectangular thingy on the distributor. If you have a 1991-1993, it will be mounted on the intake. Replace that...

    got a 5 speed but

Try getting a hold of a set of Ford factory manuals off of EBay. They have a transmission section in them each year. They cover complete disassembly and reassembly. I'm sure there are also other T5 repair manuals out there too.

    2.3 Wiring diagram

It's your lucky day! They are online, thanks to Foureyedpride.com. If you are not a member on there, I would SERIOUSLY consider signing up over there. I came here via them but that is my home. Link for your diagrams: http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthread.php?t=50010 That should do it...

2.3 4cyl. Why does it have 8 plugs?

The 2.3L was last used in 1997 in the Ford Ranger. In 1998 it was upgraded to a 2.5L and was used until 2002, when it was dropped completely. The new 2.3L is a DOHC aluminum engine of the Duratec family.

Kinda in need of help and ideas about problems....

If you can get your hands on a Chilton or Haynes manual, that would be an excellent start. It will show you what is what and basics on how to replace it. After you visually inspect things in the engine bay, I would run the codes on it. A repair guide will tell you how to do it. All you need is a...

    Radiator leaking

That's how I fill mine too. Pretty simple. Just make sure you fill it full and then wait for the thermostat to open. That will push a lot of air out and make the level go down so you can add more coolant. For the next few days just make sure your overflow bottle has plenty of fluid in it so as...

headlights dimming out at high rpm's

THe only thing I could think of that would make your headlights dim at high rpm would be the drain the ignition is putting on the electrical system. If the alternator is old, maybe try a reman or rebuilding it. Or, for more fun (but more money) go with an MSD setup.

Need Help. coolant in oil, engine knocking, won't stay running.

In the 2.3L, there are ony 3 ways oil can mix with coolant, none of which are good. 1. You could have a crack in your headgasket or some how dislodged it. 2. Cracked head. 3. Cracked block. Being able to see or not see a crack does not mean a whole lot. Cast iron can get hairline cracks...

source for 2.3na heat/cool lines and Vac diagrams?

My heater core occasionally smells of coolant when I have the heat on so I know it's starting to seep a little. I really don't want to have to replace it though. I may just have the garage do it and pay the $500 for them to do it. I'm so busy that I don't know when I would have time to do it.

    so I bought this car

That stand looks sweet. This is a perfect example of why i need a MIG welder for Christmas. I bought a custom stand off of EBay a few months back for my spare 2.3L. A guy up in Towanda, PA welds them up and sells them for about 30 bucks. Honestly, what you made is better since it handles the...

Need Help. coolant in oil, engine knocking, won't stay running.

Hopefully the block isn't cracked or the head cracked. Heads are fairly cheap and easy to come by, but being that this engine was recently rebuilt, none of this should have ever happened. Was it your fault the engine failed? I would say most likely not. I have never heard of a rebuilt engine...

source for 2.3na heat/cool lines and Vac diagrams?

Right port as in the right port when you are looking at it from the engine bay. (port closest to center of vehicle, with left port being closest to passenger's side fender apron.) Basically, just make sure the coolant line coming around from the back of the engine is teed into the line that...

source for 2.3na heat/cool lines and Vac diagrams?

It sounds as if your brake booster is not working. A spongy pedal or excessive pedal travel would be air in the lines or contamination in the fluid, but what you describe does seem a lot like a bad booster. Heater cores suck. And I mean suck. Have to remove the dash to do them. As for coolant...

Need Help. coolant in oil, engine knocking, won't stay running.

Deep knocking (klunking) would most likely indicated a bad main bearing. If it was doing this beforehand then there may have been some sort of failure in the oiling system (clogged passage, bad pump) which probably wouldn't cause a head gasket failure, but it's always possible. If it has started...

Need Help. coolant in oil, engine knocking, won't stay running.

It sounds like a classic case of a head gasket failure. It sounds like the oil pressure passage area of the gasket failed first and radiated out from there. Head gasket changes on these engines are pretty easy. The big question is what caused the head gasket failure. Sometimes they DO just fail...

    88 2.3l will not start

Most fusible links when they blow will melt a little. But, some can go out without melting. Your Haynes manual should show the locations along the wires. What you're looking for is a fat rectangle on a wire (usually right near the connection point) that says "Fusible Link" on it. They are all...

    need part info

The 5 speeds that will fit your car exactly will come from any 87-93 2.3L Mustang (T5 transmission). The T5 out of a 5.0L car has a larger input shaft and will not fit unless modified. The T5 out of an 84-86 SVO or 83-84 Turbo GT or Capri RS Turbo will work, but good luck ever stumbling across...

    88 2.3l will not start

Agreed. A free and easy thing to do would be to check your wiring harness (especially fusible links and grounds). If everything tests ok, I would check the computer for codes. Directions for that are available online or in a Chilton/Haynes manual. Since it will not run, you will only be able to...
