    Pulley alignment issue

I don't necessarily need the smog pump, and would throw in an eliminator kit, but, it appears anything which sits on this bracket will be too far forward, which includes the tensioner/idler pulley. So, either way I'm going to need to resolve this issue. If I were to eliminate the smog pump...

    Pulley alignment issue

Kurt, I agree it is frustrating and a bit odd. It essentially almost has to be related to the smog bracket at this point. Yesterday I went out and purchased some thin bolt nuts 1/8" in thickness, and placed them between the crank pulley and the balancer. It made the crank flush with the...

I was being a doofus and...

I've been shocked pretty good by the distributor years back when setting my timing. I had a timing light powered from the + battery terminal, and had it grounded to the shock tower. After I used the distributor wrench to loosen the distributor hold down bolt, I started to turn the distributor...

    Pulley alignment issue

Hey Kurt, I appreciate your follow up. I agree there shouldn't be a reason why this bracket is sitting further forward in the engine bay than it was on the old setup. The only thing I can think of, is if the aluminum casting of the AFR head is slightly larger (length wise) than the GT40X head...

    Pulley alignment issue

I ended up marking the threads on the bolt with whiteout, where the edge of the bracket is so that I could see how far the bolt sticks out of the bracket. This also allowed me to see how deep the bolt screwed into the head. If I couldn't hand screw the bolt in as far as the whiteout mark, then I...

advice needed, my top end build

290rwhp/310ft/lbs depending on the dyno. What other exhaust do you have on the car? What size throttle body and MAF? Under drive pulleys?

    Towing lowered cars

ouch! My main concern with mine is in the front, where the intercooler makes the front bumper sit slightly lower.

    valve cover gaskets

I've reused my metal valve cover gaskets before. I use a little bit of black O2 sensor friendly RTV to help seal them as well.

    Towing lowered cars

In the near future, I plan to install a new suspension package which will end up lowering my car about 1.5" in the front, and perhaps a little less in the rear. I currently have the stock dune buggy ride height. My concern, is if the car ever has to be towed on a flatbed, how could this...

    Pulley alignment issue

hmm, that's interesting. The large bolt hole in the head has a type of sheathing in it. When you screw the bolt in, it goes into the sheathing which screws into the cylinder head. This sheathing isn't exactly difficult to screw outwards... I never noticed this before.

    Pulley alignment issue

I don't suppose you know which bolt hole you had issues with? There are three; one 13mm at the top of the bracket which sits behind a rubber hose connector that leads to a heater hose line, one larger 3/4" bolt head which is behind the tensioner, and another 13mm bolt which is to the right and...

    Pulley alignment issue

Yep, I installed the assembled shortblock into the car, as well as all of the accessories including this bracket. I wasn't aware of that some aftermarket heads required tapping some of the bolt holes, but this is certainly a place to start looking.

    Pulley alignment issue

Pulley photo's pt2 4) When measuring the tensioner to the crank, there is an evident gap, around 1/8, give or take with the tensioner sitting furthest outward. ( picture: tensioner to crank 2 ) 5) When measuring the tensioner to the water pump pulley, there also appears to be a misalignment...

    Pulley alignment issue

I've spent some more time analyzing this issue, and after taking several pictures which I'm including here as well as measurements, I believe the culprit may lie with the smog pump bracket and it's mating to the block/heads. See below for more details: 1) When measuring the smog pump pulley...
