    It looks to me like your gasket should be flipped on the pump. Then the ports should line up. I would assume the bolts would too. I would re-examine everything. I would also verify that it's for the correct year.

    I would try taking the driveshaft out first. Don't be afraid to bend the mounts on the pipe. Most aftermarket items don't first 100% and generally require a small amount of finess or mods to fit correctly.

    Detonation is when the cylinder starts burning before the piston reaches TDC. What it does is tries to compress the expanding gasses(the fuel air expand as they burn) while the gasses are trying to expand. It does really bad things to pistons and rods and generally blows the head gaskets out...

    Just keep your timing relatively stock for street use. When you bump it up for "performance driving" is when you run into issues with high compression. Either that or just beat it in her head that she has to run premium or she's paying for the new motor :-)
