What am I getting myself into A/C restor

Thanks. A lot of work went into it. But I am staying nice and cool in this 100+ heat and I haven't touched the GT system in years and the vert since I did it last year. I like to fix things right the first time.

Removing windshield trim on 93 vert

You remove it by removing a screw in the middle on the top. Then, there is a screw on each corner at the top that is hidden by the weatherstrip. The two top pieces pull straight off. The two pillar pieces roll off, the direction is from the windshield towards the outside of the car. The two...

A/C compressor will not turn on

With a proper set of gauges. The low side should read ~90PSI at rest. When the system is turned on, you should see the low side fall to ~18-21PSI (R134A) before the switch turns the compressor off. The switch should energize the compressor when it rises back up to ~40PSI.

    Will AC work after removal?

Your logic is faulty. The system was under pressure in both instances. Your mechanic used a recovery machine to recover the refrigerant. At this time, the recovery machine separated the oil from the refrigerant. Once a system is emptied, it is placed under a vacuum to boil out any moisture...

    Will AC work after removal?

Oil is entrained in the refrigerant whether it is overcharged or properly charged with oil. It is the refrigerant that circulates the oil throughout the system. Are you sure that you are not thinking of a recovery unit? It is what recovers the refrigerant while separating the oil and drying the...

    Will AC work after removal?

Either read jrichker's writeup, or see mine where I describe how to flush and convert. Fox R134A Conversion Yes. They are called "alternative refrigerants". Please see the below webpage. EPA: Choosing and Using Alternative Refrigerants

    Will AC work after removal?

It is a common misconception that a vacuum draws out the oil. It does not. jrichker said that 5 minutes before you did.

    Will AC work after removal?

Charging into a vacuum increases performance. Less air, more refrigerant for a given pressure. I also do more than the kit that people get from the auto parts stores that technicians call "death kits". Fox R134A Conversion

    R-12 Freon

What is your definition of "top off"? Most people think it means to add a few ounces. If there is no difference between "top off" and "recharge", then I agree. Yet, I still do not like Freeze12 after all these years. It's 80% R134A. No compressor is warranted when Freeze-12 is used. The R142B...

    A/C O-Rings?

Nope. It should have an o-ring. What parts did you not replace? That is what I would suspect to have a leak. The hardest to find is one in the evaporator. Takes some expensive equipment.

The reason to change the accumulator when converting is to take out the XH5 desiccant and put in an accumulator with the XH7 desiccant. My link has told about the green rings for years. It is not imperative to swap out the accumulator each time the system is opened. One cannot top off an R12...
