    check all the electrical first. Hook a mechanical gauge to see if there is oil pressure. If no then you are going to have to change the pump. You can with it with the engine in the car but you unbolt motormounts take off steering rack, jack up the engine, shove 2x4 between engine and motor mount...

    no the gearing will be the same but use the Torque converter from the stang(if it's still good) valve body(if it's good) and the governor from the tailshaft and no more AOD shuffles

    if all it really needs is body panels(no frame damage) then I would talk him down on $$$. Otherwise it sounds like an ok deal but we need pics of it now. 1 head and head gasket for my $340 wonder. Went from having a cracked head to pulling 8.9 1/8th mile times.     a little more practice you should be down to 9.2-9.0. My 86 used to run 9.0 all day long with an AOD and the 2.73. I still got the AOD but I went with 4.10s and ported E7 heads, Shift kit with and epoxy mod, and some radials and I got her down to 8.42. Little by little you'll get it there
