    tire fitment

Air shocks are bad because they unload the rear springs (can you say wheel hop?) and raise the center of gravity. Longer shackles are bad because they overload the rear half of the spring. If you have problems with the wheel wells hitting the tires then your tires are too wide or your wheel...

    what starter for t-5 conversion

I agree, reman starters are hit and miss. Get a brand new mini starter from DB Electrical for about $75. That will take care of all your problems. Cranks my 347 with 18 degrees initial when hot no problem.

Which cylinder heads is the best for 289 CID?

Noticed that you did not mention the tranny or rear axle ratio. If you put big heads and a big cam in a 289 in front of an auto with a stock converter and 2.79 rear gears you are going to be VERY disappointed. It won't start pulling until about 30 mph in first.

    Suspension Suggestions?

Far and away the best thing I did to my suspension was a set of Konis. Set them for whatever you want - handling or ride. IMO for a decent ride don't lower the car to the ground with low profile tires. You will end up with a go cart and "ride" is a thing of the past. The tires are a big...

Which cylinder heads is the best for 289 CID?

That is not a big cam or carb. I would go with the AFR 165. Can't go wrong with them. However, if you are going to replace the pistons anyhow you might seriously consider stroking the motor to 347. Easy way to get a lot more HP. But you should upgrade the carb to a 750.

351 Windsor hp limit? head options?

500 hp out of 351 cubic inches is doable but I'm not sure how drivable it will be. You are talking about a pretty radical cam that probably won't make much vacuum and the idle quality won't be very good. Plus below 2500 it will not pull great. In my 347 (worked Dart Pro 1 heads) I had a...

    Need engine opinions/ideas BOSS 347

The Clevor concept made sense back when there were not a lot of SBF heads available. There are plenty of aftermarket heads out there that will flow just as well as (if not better) than the Cleveland heads and you can just bolt them on. A stock block 347 with good SBF heads will put out just...

Does it make sense to use HIPO headers?

4-speed or automatic? If you have a manual with the stock z-bar setup you can run into clearance problems with headers. I'm running Hipo exhaust manifolds on my 347. Probably losing 30 hp at 6000 rpm but no clearance problems, no leaks, no PS drop bracket. I'm at the point where I just...

    351W exhaust manifolds

Those are from a 1980 or later vehicle. I doubt they would fit but you can give them a try. Personally I would run HiPo exhaust manifolds. You know they will fit and they are much better than the stock ones.

    Carb Help

I have a Holley 950 HP (double pumper) on the stroked FE in my 68 vert. The four corner idle is great - starts right up and idles well when cold even without a choke. Drivability is excellent.

351M OH NO! What direction do I go now?

I'm wondering how you got a 351M to fit in a Mustang engine compartment. It will go in if you remove the exhaust manifolds but no way to get a header in there, much less the manifolds. I would take another look at it. As for power - note that an engine is a balanced combination of parts...

about time for a new carburetor

If you don't want to fiddle with it get an Edelbrock. If you don't plan to rev it above 5000 then I would get a 500 cfm. Otherwise get the 600 cfm. Watch ebay and you can get a barely used on in the box for about $175.

289 Engine issue when put into gear.

Carburated engines can idle drastically differently depending on the climate. My 67 GT350 idles at 900 rpm on a cool dry day versus 750 rpm on a hot humid one. That is without changing anything. It could be that a climate change has degraded your idle quality just enough to push you over...

    tranny

Here are my choices in order: 5-speed, 5-speed, 5-speed. I've driven all of them and the OD allows you to run lower rear gears and still low rpms on the highway. Best of both worlds.

Anyone running GT Competition leaf springs from Eaton?

I have their mono leafs and traction devices. The traction is nothing short of amazing versus the stock suspension in my other Mustang.

throttle problems and shuts off at idle when hot???

The gas is boiling out of the carb OR is boiling in the fuel lines. Make sure the fuel lines don't touch the motor or get near the exhaust system anywhere. Put an insulating spacer between the carb and intake - the thicker the better. Aluminum is not an insulator.

do you consider working on you classic a "break from reality or big hassle" ?

What you are experiencing is the reason so many projects never get finished. When I had my first kid (and then two more) I completely quit working on my Shelby because of the money/time issue. Six years later I decided I needed to finish it or sell it. However, it was nowhere near as bad as...
