Grafting 67/68 Shock Towers To 65/66 Mustang

Thanks Jim. It was weird how side was quite nice and the other a disaster. They didn't even get the alignment holes drilled properly on the driver's side. Luckily the 3 motor mount were properly located. Dropping the slot corrected the distance to them. I suspect that the holes were...

Grafting 67/68 Shock Towers To 65/66 Mustang

Probably the worst issue that I had was that the Dynacorn motor mount bracket on the driver's side was spot welded out of position AND was stamped poorly at the camber adjustment slot. The slot which was at an odd 5-6* angle instead of being almost parallel to the ground like the passenger side...

Grafting 67/68 Shock Towers To 65/66 Mustang

Made a little progress over the last weekend. Spent a few hours punching holes and grinding away paint in prep for welding: Solved a few issues too. The first was what to do with the upper apron support "flap" that is found on the 67/68' but not on the 65/66's. The flap is the...

Grafting 67/68 Shock Towers To 65/66 Mustang

Right now I would say they remain the same because the frame mount remains untouched and the crossmember still bolts up. Can't be 100% sure without the motor installed but there appears to be no issue. One thing that came to light that I haven't mentioned, the early 65' 3 piece motor mounts...

Grafting 67/68 Shock Towers To 65/66 Mustang

Thank You. IIRC the towers that you are referring to do not use a stock type suspension--one must go coil over since they eliminate the UCA. Not a bad thing but this method ups the expense quite a bit. The towers alone are over $300 per side. This was my 2nd choice when I was checking...

Grafting 67/68 Shock Towers To 65/66 Mustang

The convertible measures 40 3/16" to the transition of the aprons from being upward to being horizontal and I measured them fore and aft of shock towers. Since cars vary, I would say 40" or wider would indicate little to no sag.

Grafting 67/68 Shock Towers To 65/66 Mustang

We have previously established that the top of the tower can be aligned using the Monte Carlo bar. The 65/66' frames have 2 factory alignment holes on the frame for the old motor bracket: It so happens that those 2 holes exist in the same location for the same purpose on the 67/68' frame...

Grafting 67/68 Shock Towers To 65/66 Mustang

Take note that the shock towers and some other parts of this conversion are an integral part of the vehicle's structure and you should seek the assistance of a properly trained professional before considering undergoing this task. The shock towers/strut rod supports are NOT bolt-in items and...

Grafting 67/68 Shock Towers To 65/66 Mustang

Horse sence is absolutely right. Also his behind the scenes help has been invaluable to me in researching this project and it would have been much harder to do without his assistance. I should have also added in my first post that one other big benefit of doing the shock tower and...

Grafting 67/68 Shock Towers To 65/66 Mustang

With the 14' racing season behind me, it's time to start my much anticipated winter project--adapting 67/68' shock towers and front suspension to my 65' Mustang. After this mod I should have gained enough engine compartment room to allow me to install a nice set of raised port racing heads and...

    Drivetrain Tool Question

When I swapped my bracket to a scattershield, I used similar bolts and nuts on the outside of the bell. The nuts clear the tranny. Of course that may not work on a stock type bell . . . .

    Laural Mountain Mustang

Obviously it would depend on where you will be in WV as its a big state, but Laurel is located more on the southwestern side of PA. As a ball park reference its kind of south of Pittsburgh and not too far above the MD/WV boarder.

    Laural Mountain Mustang

I had a good experience with a windshield purchase. Shipping was cheap too for such a big item (although I only live 100 miles away.)

Switching To Closed Crankcase-type Oil Cap On 1966 289

I would like to add that just drilling an old valve cover may not give the necessary splash shield that prevents excess oil from being drawn into the intake manifold. It is practically mandatory. Either source another valve cover or plan on making a shield. From my experience, the deep pocket...

    68 Coupe- Going Topless

I can't help but find irony in spending $100 for a pallet of sand and then placing it in a section of yard made of . . . . . . . . .sand. :)

Need A Little (a Lot) Of Help...

That is a sad story, but it may not be as bad as it sounds so lets find out . . . . I suggest removing all the spark plugs (make sure to remember which plug wire goes where), putting the transmission in park (or neutral) with the wheels blocked, and then using a ratchet plus the appropriate...

    Engine Input Needed

Correct-the bigger chamber heads will drop compression which will affect performance. I like higher compression, but that is me. I'm not your 289 performance guy but I think that 10:1 will be difficult without a "pop up" piston (which I wouldn't do.) Of course the cam has to support the...

    Engine Input Needed

I'm confused too . . . . IMHO, the compression will drop with the newer heads and you may not get the performance that you expect the other wise stock block 289. It could even become a turd from to much cam without the compression to back it up.

Steps To Get 65 Mustang Running Again?

When you prime, be sure that the drill is running "counter clock wise" or nothing will happen. Best to use a 1/2" drill as when the oil pressure builds up, it will tax a lesser drill and they will get hot. If oil is not making it to a set of rockers, then rotate the motor 1/4 turn by hand...
