5.0 water pump, alternator, belts and running hot

Depending on the casting numbers on the timing cover you may need to replace that too. The early 60 covers don't function with the later 60's to mid 80's (std rotation) waterpumps. Ford used a reverse rotation pump on the 79-85 Mustangs that mated with the std rotation timing covers (but...

    351W Stroker vs 390

You've obviously never driven much have you ? Driver's skill has just as much to do with the end result than the car alone. Any EXPERIENCED driver KNOWS this is true. The total curb weight has little to do with it.

    351W Stroker vs 390

:bs: You picka small block car, I'll drive big block Stang against you ANYTIME, ANYWHERE and I'll hand you your ass everytime. It'lll be you that'll be sitting on the porch wondering what happened to you. You won't be the first either that's tried it, and lost. :D

5.0 water pump, alternator, belts and running hot

Oh, God. You're the poster boy now for "why you should never mix Ford FEAD components" . That said, you've got multiple problems here, all stemming from mismatched parts. Based on what you descibed, you've got a pre 70 water pump that's now being spun backwards. That's only part of the problem...

about time for a new carburetor

The 570 is perfect for what you're doing. I have one on a roller 5.0 in my 89 Ranger (ported E7 heads, stock F4TE cam, Shelby tri-Y headers, sitting on a Ford A321 intake) Mixture is as perfect as you can get as is, straight out of the box. The only thing I did was install a lighter sec spring.

    351W Stroker vs 390

The suspension has little to do with it. The real cost of going with a 390 in a small block car is the cost of the motor mounts, transmission mount (crossmember) and headers. Last time I looked the motor mount parts (there's three separate pieces in the FE mounts you need) ran well over $100...

    351W Stroker vs 390

If you have a small block car now, go with the 351W stroker. If you've got a big block car and all the parts are there, do the 390. The big difference is going to be the price of converting one to the other. The weight difference is a non issue. Big block Stangs can be made to handle as well as...

Swapped Dual Quad for a Quick Fuel Carb setup - problems

The pointer will be at zero at both the TDC's in the firing sequence. It must be at zero on the top of the compression stroke to be correctly timed. What is often overlooked is the distributor shaft turn slightly when the gears mesh, throwing the timing off. The shaft must be turned slightly to...

It runs, but it over heats. No rear coolant crossover in intake the problem?

Might want to also verify the head gaskets are installed correctly also. There's a tab that sticks out covering one corner of the block deck in the front. If the gasket is sticking out covering the block deck the gasket is installed correctly.

    Opinions for an intake/carb combo

You can still buy em from Mustangs Unlimited. Brand spankin new. Gonna cost you a bit more than it did in the 60's though. I bought my set second hand for $1100 (shipping included) from a guy in Indiana. The whole set was only a year old when I bought it 6 years ago.

    Opinions for an intake/carb combo

:nice:Times two. :nice: This is what I've had on the 331 in my 77 Comet ever since I built the motor 6 years ago (had the motor in my 89 Ranger too) Dead reliable, runs fantastic, ain't touched the carbs since the initial tuning, other than a rejet after installing spacers under em. Always get...

    need carb help.....

I may be wrong but I don't think the 289 Hi-po ever had a 3 speed manual transmission behind it.

    Harmonic balancer for 331 stroker?

The block casting numbers have little or nothing to do with the crankshaft imbalance. Be that as it may, if he's got a 331, chances are it's 28. My 331 is 28, although it's built around a late 80's roller block. 99% of stroker SBF's are 28.

    Harmonic balancer for 331 stroker?

Most strokers are 28 oz/in imbalance.

    8.8 rear, worth it?

Just me, but the only 8.8 I'd consider is one from an Exploder. All these have 31 spline axles, many have disc brakes and traction loc too.Now unless the 05's have 31's too........................................don't know what axles are in my 06, but it's got 3.55's and trac-loc.

    Timing Questions/Opinions???

Run as much timing as the fuel you're using will allow.

    Timing Questions/Opinions???

You don't add the vacuum advance in the total. When you're at or near WOT, the vacuum signal decreases, thus whatever advance was added disappears.

    302 roller ca/head

Both will go a long way into good street manners. You shouldn't have any problems there.

    302 roller ca/head

Your intake/carb combo has a lot to do with street manners as well as the heads and cam. Yet you didn't mention them

Where do I start with tuning this Holley?

Just me, but I think your choice of the 3.5 powervalve wasnt a good one. Most come with a 6.5 and I've never seen the need to use anything different.
