    Actually you can get more. I ran 255 40 17 for years on 17x8 rims with a stock leaf style suspension.

    And I've done quite well with the leaf springs in my car too. That doesn't preclude the fact that a 3 and a 4 link does more in the rear of the car than straight leaf springs do.

    You will need spacers to retaining using your current tire/wheel combo in the rear without changing the track width since the housing is a little narrower than stock.

    A leaf spring does all the things a 4 link does? If your definition of 'everything' means it holds the rear under the car and lets you drive it....then sure....otherwise....no they do not.

    You will want to swap the 65 shock plates to 67 shock plates since as was pointed out already the tubes are not tapered. This will save you having to modify the 65 shock plates. I have a 57 ford 9 inch in my 65.

    Other than the whole stretching a tire onto a larger than recommended rim width range and all the curb rash that will give you from the lack of a sidewall and all the pot hole dings in the edges of the rim for the same reason...sure it bolts right on with that size ;).

    Not really other than on the front 8 inch wide...4.75 generally accepted BS requirement...so subtract 8 from your width divide by two, add that to 4.75 and then compare to (subtract from) the BS you have on the wheel now and that will get you in the ball park for a spacer to try.

    Steering wheel/column issues

    Yes there is a little plastic bushing that keeps the column centered on the shaft. Take of the steering wheel nut, pull the wheel, and it sits under there.
