    What should it cost?

Your $3000 was pretty close. A little more investigation shows about $2300 in parts w/ tax and shipping. I think at least $800 in labor. Good guess!

    What should it cost?

Is it best to sell it on E-Bay or is there a better venue?

    What should it cost?

Assuming the shop purchases and installs all parts for a Toploader to T-5 swap, what should it cost? ('68 289 in Monterey, Ca.) Basically, I think they will need: T-5 (new), bell housing (?), shorten drive shaft, new clutch (Centerforce), new Starter(?), cable clutch conv kit, and ? 10...

    Axle lubrication question

OK. So the only bearings receiving lubrication from the diff are the inner ones, mounted in the diff itself. I need to take one apart for educational purposes. Thanks.

    Axle lubrication question

What about the inner bearing? I changed the oil twice after the first change out had the fine flakes in it - probably overkill. I'm an overprotective Mustang owner. My kids might say it gets more attention than they do.

    Axle lubrication question

What lubricates the inner and outer bearings on the rear axle? (My '68 has a rebuilt 8" LS 3.00 w/new axle bearings. I have changed the oil a couple of times w/synthetic 80-90 w/ LS additive fluid. There was a surprising amount of fine metal flake in the oil after the first 1000 miles. I am...

Finished the scarebird conversion, a few notes.

Me too. Options that I have found include replacing the z-bar with the hi-po type which apparently allows tri-ys to be used. Others have suggested shorties but they look like they may hit the engine mount. Good luck.

DJ, since you have the stock clutch linkage, what headers do you use if any?

    1.7 Rocker option?

Thanks Mr. Hearne. The real learning is that I need different heads, cam, header, and probably carb. I'll need to save maybe $2000 for parts and $1500 for labor? Thats getting to the point of a low end crate engine. what to do?!?

    1.7 Rocker option?

Ouch. But true I suppose. I really am not a good mechanic and will have to pay for stuff like head/header swap. The headers that I find usually exclude the manual trans clutch linkage (z bar). Would you start there?

    1.7 Rocker option?

Does this make sense? My stock '68 289 (8.7:1 due to 63cc heads in 68) has 60,000 miles on it and is healthy. I'd like to bump the power band up as it loses steam by 4500rpm. It has a 500cfm Edel w/ Performer intake, dual exhaust from stock headers. Would an inexpensive, easy, upgrade be 1.7...

    Edelbrock carb challenge

Bullitt, which Holley did you buy? Is it a very simple swap, and do you have to fool with jetting or does it come close for the needs of a stock 289 (I'm not experienced with carbs)?

    Edelbrock carb challenge

'02, do you autocross or road race it? If the kit solves the problem under high lateral g-force loads, I'll try it.

    Edelbrock carb challenge

Thanks for the idea. I don't know much about carbs. Is the needle attached to a float arm? And that would open and close the fuel flow?

    Edelbrock carb challenge

My stock 289 stumbles/bogs coming out of hard turns in autocorss. I assume that the Edelbrock 500cfm (don't know model # but it is their most basic model) is not really a "race" carb and is not supplying fuel due to fuel slosh at the float/bowl. Any ideas to solve this without replacing the...

    glass-packs

I have glass packs, balance pipe, and stock exhaust manifolds on my 68 289 (9:1 comp, stock cam). Even though its a vert, it sounds aggressive without being too loud. You'll like it. My neighbors do.

    Two hours from now...

...I'll put the new Milodon oil sump pan on the 289. The bottom end looks good to me, but is there anything that I should check while that is open?

    Which Headers to go with?!?!?!

As I understand it, the Hi-Po used a different exhaust manifold and a different z-bar that allowed room for the tri-y. The common 289/302 log header and z-bar apparently won't accomodate the tri-y. Auto trans is an easy and common application.

    Which Headers to go with?!?!?!

Do you have a manual trans? The catalogs that sell the tri-y have a comment about them not fitting with the stock manual trans z-bar. I beleive I saw a Doug's header that is tri-y configuration, but goes around the z-bar.

Do stock 289 Oil pans have any baffles?

Is the removal of the main cap bolts to put in studs for the windage tray risk free for a novice mechanic?
