    gas gauge is a POS!!

Mine did the exact same thing, I just replaced the sending unit with a Ford replacement. $90 shipped, gas guage works perfectly now. I dumped aproximately 7 gallons in it and it read half, then topped it off and it read full; good enough for me.

New 306 is still wrapping/knocking...help me or shoot me

You can also just pull off the oil filter you're currently running on the car and cut the shell off with a hacksaw or something, then see if there are any metal shavings on the filter element.

    Glowing red headers!!!

If you don't have a timing light handy, you can simply hook a vaccum guage up to a intake vaccum port and adjust your timing to provide the most vaccum; this will put you in the ballpark until you can get it timed with a light. In addition to your timing, check your carb's idle mixture...

getting rid of heater core or plugging it?

The easiest way is to remove both heater hoses from the firewall and intake manifold and replace them with a single hose; thereby removing your heater core from the loop. Besides not having any heat, there are no other side effects. BTW, I've seen heater bypass caps for small block...

    Milling Used Heads...is it needed?

I haven't talked to a machine shop recently, but they shouldn't charge you very much to check the heads with a straightedge. Well worth the money to have them checked and avoid problems later.

my under drive pully rubs on my new 160amp alt is there anything i can do?

As long as your belt alignment isn't thrown off, I can't think of any reason why you can't put a shim behind your pulley to give it some clearance.

    I know I'm new, but I need a little help....Cooling problems?

Doesn't sound like anything is "plugged". If your head gaskets or intake gaskets or thermostat were installed incorrectly...the car would overheat very quickly, regardless if it was moving or not. Since you say it runs nice and cool on the highway, it would seem that the coolant is able to...

    My 5.0 won't start...HELP!

I just went through the same thing with my '89. Over the last few weeks I noticed that the fuel pump's whine seemed to be getting louder. Well, while driving down the road the car started losing power and finally stalled, then refused to start. At that point, when I turned the key on, the...

    Removing Upper Intake

I would highly recommend the blue Fel Pro valve cover gaskets, they're called "Perma Dry Plus". They're bright blue in color, with metal inserts around the bolt holes; plus they're reuseable. I put them on my '89 with absolutely no sealant, torqued them to the recommended spec, and after one...

OK, no Impala, but how about Grand Marquis??

The best car I have ever owned (besides the mustang of course) was a 1988 Grand Marquis. It had tons of room, rode excellent, got 25mph on the freeway, and was almost totally trouble free. For $2,000 the car would have to be in pretty good shape, you'd be suprized at how cheap they sell. If...

Too much carb for my car?

I second the motion to go with a Barry Grant carb. Their technical support is second to none. Car Craft did an article a few years back, and the tune recommended by B&G for their custom application (jet sizes, etc) was dead on based on their dyno tests. Additionally, th demon carburetors are...

    85 5.0 to 89 spec

By the time you get done buying all of the necessary parts to make the conversion (intake, fuel system, etc) you might as well buy a complete engine at a junkyard. I don't know how things are out by you, but where I'm from 5.0's from that era aren't too difficult to locate at the wrecking...

Anybody ever gotten away with cheap engine build??

What is this engine going to be used for? If longevity isn't a big concern, hit the cylinders with a hone to break the glaze (use a ridge reamer if needed) throw in some new pistons along with the rest of your rebuild kit and you'll be in business. I have seen some junkyard specials run for...

    Help with changing pinion seal

It is fairly straightforward; first you have to remove the pinion nut located in the center of the yoke. In my experience, it is usually easiest to have someone hold the yoke with a pipe wrench/adjustable wrench and remove the pinion nut with an impact wrench. You could try just setting...

    ? about replacing front struts

The front struts on my '89 Gt are pretty much worn out, and I am about to buy some replacements. My questions is if I need to have the front end realigned after I replace the struts. The alignment appears to be fine at the moment.
