First time thermostat change, need advise.

t-stat Tip: When you get the thermostat housing removed and cleaned, put it in a vice or some sort of clamp and put a light layer of high-tack gasket sealant on the gasket surface. Then you can stick you gasket on and if you're careful, it will hold the thermostat in place and allow you to...

    400m v8.......cheap mild mods????

A 400M is a torque monster, I used to own a '78 F250 that had one; it lasted over 200,000 miles. Those engines had some of the most restrictive intake and exhaust manifolds I have ever seen. Find yourself a nice 4bbl intake and carb, and a cheap set of headers. The stock cam is very mild...

I know it's not a good idea to run synth oil in a high mileage motor, but???????

I've used the Felpro rubber ones, they were bright blue with metal inserts; I would recommend them to anyone. They're reuseable, and totally leak free.

Broken intake bolts in my heads

I would purchase a 5/16" Heli-coil kit. The kit will come with the correct size drill bit to allow you to drill out those old intake bolts, and insert the new threads.

    4 BBL Intake?

I wouldn't recommend putting a used cam in you engine. Since your cam isn't a roller, a new one would be pretty affordable. Besides, if you're looking for a more aggressive cam, you are very unlikely to find one out in the junk yard. Does your car have a manual transmission? Different gear...

only 12 hg of vacuum at idle???

You say your timing was way off...did you get your 12 hg before you adjusted the timing or after? Having little or no advance on your timing will cause low manifold vaccum readings. Some people actually adjust their ignition timing with a vaccum guage; you adjust the timing at an idle until...

    question about 85 5.0 block

The '85 stock pistons are TRW hypereutectic castings with the "4-eyebrow" design. Unless you're planning on running a cam with a lot of lift and/or milling the heads, I don't think piston clearance will be a problem. The '86 engines had totally flat pistons to go along with those "high swirl"...

    Engine still runs like ass.

20 inches of HG sounds about right; however you should be more concerned with how fast your vaccum gauage returns to 20" when you rev the engine and let off the throttle. If you have no vaccum leaks the needle should drop when you open the throttle, but quickly snap back up when you let off...

    question about 85 5.0 block

I have an engine out of an '85 GT in my garage as we speak. The 85's were the first year of the roller cam; thats why whenever anyone converts an EFI motor to a carb they look for an '85 distributor. The distributor has a steel gear to work with the roller cam and is easy to wire up with a...

    question about 85 5.0 block

I'm not totally sure about the intake bolt pattern, but I know that the timing cover is a little different. Your '85 engine used a mechanical fuel pump, and the timing cover has the hole in the side for the fuel pump to bolt up to. You can either get a cover off an EFI engine, or buy a...

    Engine still runs like ass.

Check your EGR valve and make sure it isn't hanging open. Also check for vaccum leaks.

Head studs or bolts where to get them?

cheap head bolts Believe it or not, you can get decent quality head bolts right from NAPA. I used a set on an '85 GT and had no problems. When I bought them the entire set was around $40.

What can I get a 8.8 out of?

I believe 85's were the last year of the 7.5" ring gear, 86 and up should have the larger ring gear. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
