    pinion bearing preload

The new pinion bearing preload spec should be a little tighter like you posted because they loosen up a bit in a short time. As far as being off on the pinion depth, did you use the same shim under the pinion? All the FMS gears I've ever had were fine with the shim that came out under the...

Piston ring end gap excessive on rebuild

This is why I always buy file fit rings. It's more work but worth it in my opinion. On the upside, if you decide to run nitrous down the road you won't have to worry about the ring gap being too tight. It'll be fine for N/A also.

    adj. shocks please help

Really it depends on the car. Give them 3 clicks from the softest setting and give that a try. If it hits the tires too hard and spins you can back them off more. Basically you want them as stiff as you can get them and still be able to hook the car.

Get rid of that stock quadrant as soon as possible and get yourself one with a firewall adjuster. The stocker will break soon.

    Clutch Help Anyone?

The pedal shouldn't be that stiff. Check the routing of your cable. It should pull straight at the fork, not at an angle. If you have it at any angle it greatly increases the pedal effort. As far as not going into gear, you need to remove more freeplay. It shouldn't engage at the floor.

    Clutch adjustment problem!!

Sounds like you need to tighten the adjustment a little. Another thing you can do that really helps is to either shim the pivot ball in the bell housing or get an adjustable one to give you some more fork travel. A good high pedal is much better for high spirited shifting occasions.

They are a little over 21/2" but with his heads they'll work fine.

    1 3/4" vs. 1 5/8" long tubes

Which brand headers are you looking at? The BBKs fit pretty good. You shouldn't have any trouble with pan clearance unless the DSS pan is different than most. A lakewood scattershield would need some grinding near the starter, but other than that they fit pretty good.

Marine in Afghanistan Top and bottem end questions please help.

Since you're on a tight budget you may want to keep your eyes open for a good used shortblock that way you have more money to spend on heads. If you buy a new rotating assembly, you'd only be part there since you'll still need the block machined and bored. Between that and the rotating...
