    The best possible approach is to have theheads "hot tanked" at a machine shop. Carbon desposits don't yield well to normal commercial solvents. The "hot tank" will make the heads appear new and resale value will improve drasticaly.

    How far should the oil pickup be from the bottom of the oil pan?

    It would be difficult to measure but I'd think 1/2" would be fine. Bending the tube SLIGHTLY would be OK but if the pan is dented or the tube distorted, there may be other issues. Consider why it needs to be fairly close then judge for yourself.

    Did the person who did the "set-up" know what they were doing? A dial indicator is a must. Don't risk further damage until you find the souce of the whine.

    With modern gasoline, just advance the timing until the valves "ping" and then retard it slightly. Not terribly scientific but, if it makes the engine "happy", who cares? BTW, it will probably be about 10-12 degrees initial advance.
