dosent want to start when cold. help?

Guys, Here's a link to a PDF file I posted before. It's 12 pages out of my Charles Probst manual that covers the function and testing of the ECT and ACT. Click on the link below and print out or save the file. www.usnaaaa.com/pingisgone.pdf It has the resistance vs...

dosent want to start when cold. help?

tsoccer3299, It’s probably a bad ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor. The ECT sensor performs the same function as a choke on an engine with a carburetor (it richens the A/F ratio on a cold engine so it can start and run until warmed up). It’s located in one of the metal coolant...

    Help me diagnose my problem

Synned, Check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail B4 you replace the fuel pump. Replacing the fuel pump is a real PITA, because its inside the fuel tank. If the pressure is OK, you don't need to mess with it.

    Help me diagnose my problem

Synned, Here are the Ford part numbers: Ford Part Numbers: ACT sensor: F32Z-12A697-C ECT sensor: F2ZZ-9G428-B BTW, Ford calls the IAT sensor the ACT (Air Charge Temperature) sensor. They are both about $50.00 at the dealer. You can get them much cheaper at an auto parts...

    Help me diagnose my problem

Synned, Since your symptoms are operating temperature related, it’s probably a combination of a bad ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor and a bad IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor. Both are thermistors (variable resistors) and degrade over time in a high-temperature environment...

Car idles fine but cuts out half the time at a stop. Ideas?

Yup, Sounds like a sticking IAC (Idle Air Controller). Also, clean the "ring of gunk" that forms in your throttle body right where the butterfly valve seats in the bore. Over the years, a little ridge of dried on dirt (the ring of gunk I mentioned) forms there. When it builds up enough...

What would cause uneven tread wear in the rear???

95Vert, The rear does not get aligned on our cars. The more likely cause for a rear tire wearing unevenly is a bent wheel. Get an alignment shop to do a runout test on the wheel in question. That will tell you if it's bent.

    MPG Improvments needed!

I too was thinking about buying a beater Honda to commute to work with to save money on gas. Then I did the math and realized that it's not a sound decision economically unless you sell your current car and actually replace it with the beater. Let's say you buy a beater Honda for between...

Car started running hot after my 2400 mile round trip, what can I check?

Jose, Under normal operating conditions your temp gauge should be pointing straight up, which is usually right where you are describing... between the R and the M. So, IMHO there is nothing wrong with your cooling system if that's where your temp gauge reads after the engine is warmed up...

    getting some smoke after wot

Wi Stang, As mentioned before, backing off the throttle after a WOT run creates a very high vacuum condition in the combustion chambers. If there is any possibility of sucking oil or oil fumes into the cylinders this is when it’s going to happen. It could be coming past the valve guide...

    Cruise control no workee

Ram000, The cruise control holds your throttle open via a cable that connects to the throttle body next to where the gas pedal throttle cable attaches. The other end of that cable connects to the cruise control vacuum diaphragm that is located INSIDE the driver’s side fender well. Cruise...

Another Pinging problem!! 20 dollar Paypal reward if you can fix it!!! No Joke!!

Final5-0, I agree with you completely. Here's the "rant" part that I left off of my original reply: After working on this car for a number of years and reading many posts in this and other forums about how common this pinging issue is with our cars, I have come to believe that the cause...

Another Pinging problem!! 20 dollar Paypal reward if you can fix it!!! No Joke!!

mustangman94, Here's my UNDER A BUCK pinging fix! After replacing nearly every sensor in my car in an attempt to cure pinging, I finally cured the last remaining bit of it by finding and fixing two small vacuum leaks. After doing everything else that everyone else tells you, look for...

Ram Air - Myth or Truth?

Guys, Allow me to throw "water" on this fire... My question about ram air intakes has always been "what the heck happens to all the WATER that gets sucked into the intake and combustion chambers when you drive through a gulley-washer rain storm?????" Does it just get burned with the...

    PINGING FIXED! Cost: 79 cents!

Kevin R. I would just call it the fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose. However, even the Ford parts department does not stock that hose as a separate part. (I checked my local dealer.) They will just sell you a foot of 5/32 inch ID fuel line for about 4 times what it will cost you at a...

    Power mirror question

Guys, My driver's side mirror wobbles around in the housing side-to-side about a quarter of an inch. Not sure what is broken inside to cause that. Can it be fixed, or I am stuck buying an entire new assembly? Thanks for any help.

    PINGING FIXED! Cost: 79 cents!

302fordracer, Here's a link to my post from back in 2003 about ACT and ECT operation and diagnosis. It's long so I didn't want to just copy it here. http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=345453 The sensors can still be "working" and still not throw a code. Follow the link for...

    PINGING FIXED! Cost: 79 cents!

RIO5.0, Thanks much for posting the picture. (I went out an took one to post, but it's harder to see the hose because its on the car.) Please tell me where the small ID hose from under the intake manifold goes. I can't remember off the top of my head, and I'm not looking at the car right...

    PINGING FIXED! Cost: 79 cents!

All, About two years ago I posted a big write-up about how replacing my ACT and ECT sensors fixed my hot weather related pinging in the 3K to 5K RPM range under 3/4 to full throttle. Well, two years later, my pinging was back! So, what, I say to myself, these sensors only last two years...
