    Vac advance, ported or manifold?

Yikes! Discourse, discussion, debate hmmm. I understand that the manifold connection essentially becomes vacuum retard at wide open throttle. That's one reason I was thinking it would help. Currently I have my initial timing set by the vacuum gauge, according to the Pony Carbs reccomendation...

Do you still have rear drums? Could be out of adjustment, worn linings or drums turned out to much. Or a combo thereof.

    Vac advance, ported or manifold?

Does your 351 have a hotter than stock cam compared to the 302?

    Vac advance, ported or manifold?

Opinions please! My stock 289 2v has ported vac advance. I've heard manifold vacuum can improve mileage. True or not? I'm also trying to get it to run better on this lite beer that passes for gas in Arizona these days. I've backed the vac advance diaphragm off to almost nothing and still get a...

What kind of bolt is this?

That's knurling. Probably there to create a press fit in the hole on the connecting rod. Sort of like a lug pressed into a wheel hub.

Plug gap and type with Flamethrower coil?

For a little fuel mileage more than anything, looking for best plug match to a 289 with Pertronix ignitor/coil setup.

Speedo bounce, need cable lube. Use?

So yours still has a problem? Planning to deal with it one day or just living with it? I think I need something that will stick to it to get fed through the sheath. Apparently Anti seize isn't good enough.

Speedo bounce, need cable lube. Use?

So what is the consensus? Since I don't have any FoMoCo B5A-19581-A speedo cable lube in my garage. What do you use that works?

I checked it again, still pretty steady, some variation maybe 1/2 a tick between 17 and 18 inches and that's after the timing was backed off a little. Of course my gauge isn't the best quality and probably not real accurate. But I would expect a problem to show up as a major fluctuation in the...

Yep, the idle screws function as expected. Turned in until it stumbles backed off about 1/2 a turn. It just doesn't seem fuel delivery related to me. My experience with carb idle issues has always been an erratic idle or it plain won't idle. This miss is more constant and rythmic with the RPM of...

Whoo Hoo! I think I nailed it no sticky wicket on the ride home. One gremlin down who knows how many more to go.

No procedure other than the tribal knowledge of start and hold it at high revs for 10-20 minutes. Drive it at various speeds, which is what I'm up to now. Rings still not seated? I checked the compression a while back, It was kind of uneven cold but when rechecked warm all cylinders were...

I'm just wondering if a hotter plug might help. I'm begining to think I need to have a bit more patience and give the engine more time to break in. The symptoms seem to come and go now. Before it was constantly present. I'm hoping the change from the break in oil to synthetic will help the weak...

    Sticky steering

Leadville's great right now. I don't think I could manage a winter up there though. Growing up in Denver was enough to make me move to the desert. Update on stickyness. Yes there's lube in the box, but the steering column, that's another matter. It's a Flaming River Tilt column and has a big...

I checked the voltage from the new engine harness, 10.5v while running. So I jumped a wire over from the battery, 13.5v. No change in the engines behavior. I did the plug wire drill, no smoking gun there either. They all caused serious miss when disconnected. As for the carb, I think it's fine...

Other than the obvious bad plug wire, what could cause trouble? The coil, cap and rotor are new. The dist is a new reman, with Pertronix inside.

That was my 1st inclination, but the box seems to check out ok. It's definitely heat related, the longer you go, the worse it gets.

Good point, the vac is steady at idle, about 18 inches. That would tend to point away from a faulty cam, Right? Maybe the lifter issue could be seperate from the miss. Hmmmmmm The wires are new but I guess that's no guarantee.

Now for another pesky, irritating gremlin/demon that is plaguing me. I've got a few hundred miles on my recently rebuilt 289 2v, .30 over but otherwise stock. Since the initial startup it has a consistently jerky idle. Not like a hot cam or crappy carb mix, but more like a steady miss. It also...
