    I'm in the south and I'm tired of seeing overkill tires in the back. I think 275s are about as big as you can go w/o being too much. Nobody should need a 315 size tire, unless for looks. But hey, each to their own.

    If you're running slicks + auto w/o a high stall, you'll bog like crazy off the line. That's why there's higher stall converters. Plus you added weight in the front with the bigger tires. And 16 sec sounds reasonable out of a 30 y.o basically stock classic.

    How much should I spend? I've been back and forth with this, like what you said. I really don't want to pay for somebody else's nice interior + paint when I'm going to redo it anyway, but I don't want to have a big rust issue either.

    I'm not sure why they wouldn't fit. As far as I know, 4spds aren't that wide. Get some headers, they're worth it. Check for 70 351C mustang headers.
