    fwiw - I did the same thing. You just have to wiggle the 5/8" hose over the larger fitting, which is a minor pain the rear, but it seems to work fine. I know that Windsor-Fox (a company that's since deceased, I think) used to recommend cutting the steel pipes short, like what jmenke described.:D

    Or at least buy yourself a rebuild kit and rebuild it correctly. That's a really simple carb, and is a good one to educate yourself on. Prepare to spend the better part of a day on your first one and be methodical and patient. If you're not that patient, take D.Hearne's advice.

    The mufflers do make a bit of an angle with the driveshaft, but that's what the H-pipe is bent for. The mufflers should sit flat when all is said and done, but from a top view, they angle in toward the front. I found the fit on my '65 to be pretty good, with the h-pipe tucked pretty nicely...

    Starter or Flywheel/Flexplate - '66

    Could be a matter of missing teeth, but it's more likely to be a bad starter drive. That's the mechanism inside the starter that forces the gear out to engage the flywheel. As 1966conv said, it's a simple matter to remove it and test it.
