WHats should I expect to pay for a valve job?

Assuming the heads aren't cracked or warpped and all the valves may be reused, figure $300-350 plus gaskets. This is for a standard valve grind, nothing extra. Installation varies by the hourly rate and should run $500 for the R&R. (includes painting & cleaning) That's what I'd charge. :D

Daily Driver leaking coolant all over...

You can often find the leak by pressurizing the cooling system with a hand pump. Most any radiator shop can do this or you can BUY such a pump from NAPA. Leaks will be evident if pressure is applied. Could be a simple mattet like a leaking hose or a thermostant gasket or the expansion aka...

    dumb Q but can you make a 289 into a 5.0?

The difference between a 289 and a 302 (5.0) is 13 cubic inches, No big deal, IMO. The cheap way to make the change is just buy a "big inch" sticker and wow your friends. :D Just don't get into a situation where you try to prove what you've got.

    Finally got in the Magazine!!

I share your pride in having a son who takes up the car hobby. My son had a '67 Cougar GT and the two of us spent many happy hours messing with it. The Cougar has now been replaced by a Jeep and my son now has a wife and three kidsthree kids. My satisfaction is that he enjoys "wrenching" and...

Let's play with words: gear ratios

ANNNNNND.. My 4X4 is running larger tires, an EAOD (4 speed) , etc. all of which factor into the equation. The 4X4 is set up to pull my travel trailer and also take advantage of the greater torque of the 460. When buying this truck I could have opted for 4.10:1, or others, but chose the...

    Drum prop valve with dics?

Wait! A proportioning valve and a distribution block are NOT (repeat NOT) the same thing. There is NO cpmpromise when it comes to brakes!

    Interior Paint Question

Be gentle in the preparation of the doors. The "moon-skin" texture should be preserved. I've had good success with "rattle-can" interior paint provided by the vendors. It is NOT the same as hardware store paint.

    Best upholstery kits?

One suggestion is to work in a warm environment (in a heated garage or on A WARM DAY) and use a hair dryer to further warm the material when it is streched and applied applied. Be sure that you have hog ring pliers and patience. :D

    ford special service tools

While special service tools are great, quite often a little improvisation will "serve" the purpose. I've done it many times. Ford special service tools are available through any Ford dealer. Don't expect them to have the tools in stock because the dealer isn't in business to sell tools...

    Best upholstery kits?

I trust my supplier, Virginia Classic Mustangto provide good stuff. I don't know of any BAD upholstry on the market, especially if it comes from a reputable supplier. With all the competition in the Mustang industry, a source can't afford to sell junk. BTW, price isn't everything!

    shift kit for an fmx????

B&M used to sell one but looks like they stopped Installation should follow a THROUGH reading of the instructions. You should also change the ATF and filter as long as you are down there. You'll also need a large pan to drain the ATF. I use a large plastic one from Rubbermaid. The job can...

Let's play with words: gear ratios

I TOLD you that I was "playing with words" and that there were two (at least) ways to correctly express the ratio concept. It boils down to where you want the best performance: on the bottom or the top end. The farther you go in either direction, the more you sacrifice the other. Selection...

    I need some Help Bad!!!

Sorry, but I have a lot of experience and that car looks like a goner. Anything added for structural integrity should be left alone unless you re ready to have the car collapse before your eyes. "Timeless Wisdom #1 (below) says it all. You would be money and time ahead to find a BETTER CAR.

    advice from veterans?

Just a passing note on 620's. They may be installed (in my experience) WITHOUT a spring compresser. A simple STOMP from my size 13's puts them right on the perches. :D Although 620's are shorter than stock springs, they have more capacity hence the firmer ride and "the look" that is...

    Repro door shells

By "shell" are you refering to the skin or the structural part of the door? I think is would be safe to say that the opinion here is that repro body parts have, shall we say "quality issues". Realmongo, from Mass., came all the way out here to sunny Washington State to get a good...

    why would starter wire smoke?

Just for the record, ALL wires have resistance even if they are in good condition. To overcome the normal resistance of the starter (about 250 amps), larger wires are used. The larger the wire gauge, the less the resistance given the same voltage. (Ohm"s Law explains many electrical problems.)

Front Cam Bearing - is placement critical?

If it we mine, I'd be concerned too. If the bearing were improperly seated (out of square) you can't help but have problems later. The cam running in the out of square bearing would cut it sufficiently to wear the bearing and cam prematurely. If you are going to run the engine hard, this will...
