Clay and wax won't remove what you are talking about. You can use Polish by hand but it won't work as good. I use either Poorboy's Pro Polish, SSR1,SSr2.5 depending on how bad the paint is. It is worth if to invest in a Porter Cable Polisher.
Yeah the lighting in the garage will show everything. When I polish, I put a halogen light up to the car. You can see all the fine scratches and swirls that way.

I've had good luck with Poorboys World products. I use their professional polish. After that it use their EX-P sealant and then top it with Natty's. The shine is amazing. I think it is just as good as Zaino. Very user friendly. www.poorboysworld.com
I had an issue with the belt also. There is a little nub that sticks out the was supposed to be grinded off by Saleen. I have heard of many people with the same problem and Saleen is aware of it. Call the Saleen warranty dept. They will send your dealership a picture of what to grind off. I...
Wystang-how are you getting the Poorboys so cheap? I've been getting the 10% discount but that's all. Doesn't really save too much. I'm wanting to start ordering a lot more of their products because I detail on the side. More savings means more money for me!
