    engine idle speed

I have always gotten good results with 600 in D as well. Start there and if it idles a little rough, try stepping it up ~50rpm or so.

    Painting the Dash

Trying to remember how we did this. We didn't really jump through hoops aside from taking our time masking everything. Like you, we had the interior stripped out. Can't comment on brand - no store brand had our color, we had to get a custom mix. You're lucky you have black and get to use cheaper...

    Carb advice please

Since this is fast turning into an Edelbrock vs. Holley thread...might as well throw in my $0.02. Had two Holleys on my Dad's Mach 1 - the first and the last. I never really listened to the talk on Holleys losing their tune often - after all, how many things are there in a carb that can adjust...

why would my gas mileage change based on how I fill up?

Hard to say, except that it sounds like some pump shutoff discrepancies. Do you use the same pump at the same station every time? I presume you pump same speed every time, and finish it off the same way every time? Maybe look at the big picture - do your half-tank usages roughly coincide with...

what do you think of this combo?

Sounds like handling is what you're after. If that's the case, I might look into an IRS setup, as I'm sure you know it's more or less a straight bolt-in.

    Cowl Shake on '67 Convertible

I'd rule out the brakes, as they were completely gone over when we went to power front discs, but now that you mention it, the wheels have never been balanced. The car's been up on a rack many a time and nobody ever noticed anything amiss with the driveshaft, but nobody was necessarily looking...

Oddball motor, 462 1967 Lincoln Continental

Hmmm...that'd make them perfect for a rat rod! Most of the engines you see in those are motors that are practically throwaways. Half are literally giveaway Chevy 305's, 307's, and 235 straight sixes... BTW that mobsteel site is awesome.

    Cowl Shake on '67 Convertible

I'm curious if this is a common experience. Our '67 convertible has the stock steel plate that Ford installed to stiffen up the body of the convertible shells, as well as the export brace, monte carlo bar, and subframe connectors. Despite these efforts, it still shakes significantly at 50-55mph...

    Name your mustang?

My '68 was "Lola" - I thought it kind of suited her. The '67 Vert I have now is the Trailer Queen, so named after my Dad insisted on trailering her to a show rather than drive her. My Dad's '73 Mach 1 was called Machie (pronounced Mah-kee)...in a similarly creative vein, his Dodge Ram was...

Anybody bother to record MPG on their steeds?

Next on the list is that. I changed my oil less than 200 miles ago, but when I change again in 3k miles, the rebuild will have almost 6k miles on it. I know I could easily start on synthetic after 3k, but better safe than sorry. I remember in my '68 the first time I ran Mobil1 it made a great...

Anybody bother to record MPG on their steeds?

Won't be gears...she's got the 3:1 economy cogs in there. Had 2.73's in my '68, don't care to do back to those. Eventually, though, it'd be nice to have an AOD with some 3.73's or 4.10's. I think some of it goes back to the Carter AFB - it dynoed with a pretty good A/F mix, but as good-natured...

Anybody bother to record MPG on their steeds?

I'm getting kind of discouraged here...my engine is so mild it should be getting WAY better than ~13...

Anybody bother to record MPG on their steeds?

That's amazing. I, too used to keep track of MPG religiously in my last three vehicles, and in particular my SVT Focus (which I'm selling to drive the Stang :nice: ) still only averages 25 or so. I've gotten mid-high 30's with a best tank of nearly 37mpg on the freeway, but we don't have a...

Anybody bother to record MPG on their steeds?

I can believe that. My '68 used about 8 gal/week on my commute, regardless of how hard or granny-like I drove. In the two years I had the same commute, it never varied more than a half-gallon per fillup, although when I first bought it and was driving her home from Portland, OR to the SF Bay...

Anybody bother to record MPG on their steeds?

Out of curiosity, I decided to start...one tank so far came out to 13.71mpg, with about 50 miles of highway time @ 70mph, two dyno pulls to 5k rpm, and a bottle of Lucas fuel injector cleaner, with another 100mi of in-town driving, much of which had a heavy right foot. The last tank had no...

    Rebuilding the 289

For what it's worth, I have Engine Analyzer 3.0. Send me the specs on what you're thinking about tossing in there and I can run it through there. It's looked to be pretty accurate so far. If you like, I put together a ~265hp 302 build on the program trying to keep a good, wide torqueband. I can...

    wheel/ tire decision

I can't remember the total backspacing with spacers and all, and on a '68 like I had vs. a '66 this may not even apply, but I ran 245/45ZR17's all the way around with no trouble aside from some minor wheel well rubbing on HARD (suspension-bottoming) bumps up front. This was on '03 Mach 1 Magnum...

Why would anybody drive a new Stang in road salt...

Like I said...if not for road salt, I'd happily drive away in Northern winters. Really, I'd rather drive a new car in that stuff than a classic for a myriad of reasons...

    Fan Clutch

We've got extra discounts at work the next three days...so methinks I'm going to get a fan clutch. Right now I have the stock steel fan mounted on a spacer. 1. What I can get through work is a Torqflo #922710 clutch, listed as the stock replacement for a c-code 289 (what the car was...

    Hit the dyno today...

Not so hot on Holleys anymore...had two of 'em, the first and the last on my Dad's '73 Mach 1. Ran great for a week or two after a dyno tune, then never ran as well again. I thought their finicky reputation was hogwash from Holley haters until I saw with my own eyes. As to the intake...I was...
