Disappointment at the dyno: 227 rwhp with afr165's and custom cam

I didnt. I asked Ed and he said the factory pushrods were what I should be using. So I shimmed the rockers properly and took his advice of reusing the pushrods since they were in good shape. If they were too short, they would eat some of the 580/570 lift up and eat a few hp but I somehow...

Disappointment at the dyno: 227 rwhp with afr165's and custom cam

ok, just found the cam specs... 5.80/5.70 lift at 1.70, 216/224 duration at .050 lift, 110 sep. Ed Curtis thinks its timing and mixture related. Allright, I'll tank up on 93 and advance the timing into the blue yonder and see what happens on the SOTP dyno first. As for the other stuff... Cam...

Disappointment at the dyno: 227 rwhp with afr165's and custom cam

Well, I adjusted my rockers and went the extra 1/4 turn and then went a little further....added a shim on ones that had to go more than another 1/2 turn. So the pushrods are really damn close ...maybe...:shrug: Now I'm not sure anymore. Would....4 extra degrees timing give me that 50...

Disappointment at the dyno: 227 rwhp with afr165's and custom cam

wouldnt that cause slow burning fuel to be ejected out the exhaust port rather than usefully burned in the combustion chamber? I was always told to run the lowest octane I can get away with. The rockers were set on the base circle of the cam.

Disappointment at the dyno: 227 rwhp with afr165's and custom cam

I changed gears from 4.56 to 3.73 since the grind. The valvetrain parts are....fresh heads and valves and springs, fresh cam with proper breakin, old lifters and old pushrods (they were all straight when roll tested), used 1.7 cobra pedestal roller rockers set to 25 ft-lbs with torque...

Disappointment at the dyno: 227 rwhp with afr165's and custom cam

Well, lets say that the pushrods were too short... If they were "too long", I would have bound the springs. If they were too short....well, the lift was some crazy high number that required 130 pounder triple springs and would have reached coil bind with 1.72 but not with 1.70's. With that much...

Disappointment at the dyno: 227 rwhp with afr165's and custom cam

Yeah, I wanted a car that pulled hard from the getgo so I felt the power every moment I was driving. I wanted it to explode out of every traffic light and do highway passing and zoom to highway speed effortlessly. I didnt want to be spinning up the motor past 4k to get my power. So I guess...

Disappointment at the dyno: 227 rwhp with afr165's and custom cam

Gotta run 87....never gonna run anything other than 87. If my car doesnt do 87, then I'll change something to make it take 87. It's my daily driver (yeah, I know....10 mpg daily driver) so it's my left nutt as it is to get to work and paying an extra 30 cents per gallon isnt my thing. I guess...

Disappointment at the dyno: 227 rwhp with afr165's and custom cam

Ok, of those 3.... 1. Valve springs. Check. Brand new pieces, triples, sold to me by ed curtis for my cam specifically and check by machine shop. 2. Pushrod length....ed curtis told me factory pushrods were the order of the day for that cam, those springs and cobra 1.7 rr's 3. Bad A/F....this...

Disappointment at the dyno: 227 rwhp with afr165's and custom cam

I guess the dynojet dyno confirmed what my sotp dyno told me.... A real hard launcher, pulls like a locomotive all the way from idle to 4k then doesnt pull any more afterward. I'm not saying it's slow, but it's low end performance is the same as it's high end performance. Now I had asked Ed...

Disappointment at the dyno: 227 rwhp with afr165's and custom cam

So yesterday morning, I went to the dyno for my first ever "official" run of the car on a dyno to see what all my years of hard work and toil and money have achieved. I had read that carcraft article about running afr165's and a stock cam with nothing but 1.7 roller rockers, a dual plane...

    LOL, Now THIS is rustproofing

It was something to this effect that caused the grease to happen in the first place....crankcase overpressure causing the fountain effect and one day I realized how damn clean it all looks when you wipe the oil off.....no rust no chips no nothing. The gunk was a sealant. This was posted here...

So how do you know when to give up?

Sometimes, I think I have too much determination and way too much willpower and way too much desire to persevere despite setbacks. Title was for a "rebuilt" or "recovered collision" or whatever its called. It was cheap at the time and had no discernable major problems. History as far as I can...

So how do you know when to give up?

Oh there were huge flames licking over the bottom of the car. I was positive the fuel tank would explode any minute. If I didnt just happen to be at my parents house at the time with a hose right there....this thread would have been a moot point. Now I drive with a fire extinguisher under the seat.

So how do you know when to give up?

I agree totally....and the "replacement car" would be a higher milage 2.0T saab. But repairs I can do. Fixing the "why in the world wont it start" or the infamous "mod A interferes with mod B" problems is significantly costlier than a few tie rods and spark plugs. What kind of problems have I...

So how do you know when to give up?

I think everything in my life has been this way: chasing the girls and actually catching a girlfriend, finally moving out, finally graduating college, finishing my big musclecar project, making it to the west coast, finally seeing my favorite band in person. You get there and you realize life is...

Carbed in MA: Failed Emm(HC:2/1.2 CO:27.37/20) Need tips!

Nope, most cats dont work without a smog pump. They do make them but they are more expensive and even then you probably want to pump some fresh air down there to thin out your exhuast gasses a bit.

Carbed in MA: Failed Emm(HC:2/1.2 CO:27.37/20) Need tips!

hats true but if you looked at the EPA requirements for HC, for instance something something up to 1990 is 1.2 and 1991 and on is 2.0 for limits. You get laxer standards with pre 91.

So how do you know when to give up?

Yeah...thats my situation. I modded it and modded it and modded it and now all the mods are causing a lot of hiccups. It never really bothered me before because I lived at home until this may (I know, I'm such a slacker! :D) when I moved out into a new apartment. Suddenly, I'm not sleeping...
